WEEK 13 — DID WE ACTUALLY SWITCH OFF? 🌿☀️

Before we left, I wrote about the idea of Week 13 — working hard, then deliberately stepping away for a few days to rest, reset and “sharpen the saw.”

Well…we are doing it. And perhaps we need to practise it more often! 😂

We relaxed.

We walked along beaches (even had a swim in the ocean) 🌊 Spent time outdoors and soaked up the sunlight ☀️ Spotted some whales 🐳 Had an afternoon siesta 💤 Spent time together away from work, appointments, timetables and the usual day-to-day routine.

No rushing from one thing to the next.

No real agenda.

In fact, our biggest daily concern has probably been…

“Where are we going to eat?” 😂🍴

And that’s been rather nice.

We talk so much about managing stress by adding things to our lives — exercise more, sleep better, eat better, meditate, do this, do that…

But sometimes managing stress can also mean taking things away.

Less rushing. Less scheduling. Less screen time. Less pressure to be somewhere.

And making room for rest, fresh air, movement, laughter and time with the people who matter. ❤️

You don’t necessarily need a holiday to do that either.

Maybe it’s an afternoon at the beach. A long walk. A phone-free Sunday. Or simply leaving some blank space in the diary.

Our little Week 13 has been a great reminder that sometimes you need to slow down to come back recharged.

Although we’re still working on that very important question…

Where ARE we eating tonight? 😂

Get Better. Stay Well. Feel Alive.

WEEK 13 — TIME TO SHARPEN THE SAW 🌿

Years ago, someone shared an idea with me that has always stuck.

There are roughly 52 weeks in a year.

Divide that into four and you get four blocks of 13 weeks.

The idea was simple:

👉 Work hard for 12 weeks.
👉 Then make Week 13 a time to step away, reset and recharge.

I don’t know that I’ve always been very good at following that advice! 😂

But this week, Ivanka and I are taking our own little Week 13.

We’re hitting the road, heading north, catching up with family and giving ourselves a few days to slow down.

Stephen Covey famously called it “sharpening the saw.”

Because you can keep pushing, working and doing more…but eventually, even the sharpest saw becomes blunt.

Health is much the same.

Sometimes looking after yourself isn't about doing more.

It’s about sleeping a little longer.
Walking without somewhere to be.
Eating well.
Getting outside.
Laughing.
Spending time with people you love.
And occasionally doing absolutely nothing. ☀️🌊

We talk a lot in the clinic about eating well, moving well and thinking well.

I’d add one more thing:

Rest well.

Because sometimes you need to slow down for a few days so you can come back with more energy for the things—and the people—that matter.

So, this week is our Week 13.

A little road trip. 🚙
A little family time. ❤️
Hopefully some sunshine. ☀️
And perhaps a little less screen time!

Get Better. Stay Well. Feel Alive.

See you when we get back refreshed, recharged…and hopefully still speaking to each other after the road trip! 😂

Can a problem in your neck actually cause a headache?

Absolutely, headaches can sometimes be associated with structures in the neck.

They're known as cervicogenic headaches.

People often describe the discomfort starting around the upper neck or base of the skull before travelling towards the side or front of the head.

And this is why, when someone comes into our Chatswood practice complaining of headaches, I don't simply ask, "Where does it hurt?"

I want to know when it started, where it starts, what triggers it, how you sit, how much time you spend looking at screens, how your neck moves—and importantly, whether there are any signs that require medical investigation.

Because a headache is a symptom.

The real question is:

Why are YOU getting yours?

Last night we had the pleasure of hosting another WonderNights at the practice — and what a great night it was! 🙌

When our kids were at school, there was a phrase commonly used as the kids got closer and into Year 12: “Beyond the Mint Gates.”

After 13 years within the familiar surroundings of school, it was about preparing students for what came next — stepping through those gates and experiencing the real world.

In many ways, that’s exactly what WonderNights is about.

It gives Macquarie University chiropractic students the opportunity to step beyond the lecture theatre and get a taste of chiropractic in the real world. 👐

To hear from some of the shining lights within our profession. ⭐
To learn from their experiences.🎓
To ask questions.🙋
To hear their stories, challenges and lessons.👂
And perhaps most importantly, to simply rub shoulders with chiropractors who have walked the road before them.👣

Last night we were incredibly fortunate to have Dr Maria Zuschmann and Dr Keith Farrugia sharing their knowledge, experience and passion with students ranging from second year right through to final year. 🎓

Maria and Keith — thank you for so generously giving your time and expertise to the next generation.

And to the students who came along — keep asking questions, keep learning and keep putting yourself in rooms with people who inspire you.

The future of our profession is sitting in those rooms. 💜

🤕 WHY DO I KEEP GETTING HEADACHES?

It's a question we hear regularly at Family Chiropractic Chatswood.

If headaches keep showing up, it's rarely random. The answer isn't always simple.

Recurring headaches can have different causes and triggers. Things worth considering can include:

🧠 Stress
💻 Long hours at a computer
📱 Screen habits
🧍 Posture
💤 Poor sleep
💧 Dehydration
🦴 Neck problems
🤕 Migraine and other headache disorders

One of the most useful things you can do is start looking for the pattern.

When does your headache start?
Where do you feel it?
What were you doing beforehand?
How did you sleep?
Does your neck feel stiff or uncomfortable as well?

A headache is a symptom—not a diagnosis. Understanding the pattern behind it, and what may be contributing, is an important first step. They tell you WhAT you're experiencing—but doesn't necessarily tell you WHy you're experiencing it.

This month we're taking a closer look at headaches and answering some of the questions we're most commonly asked in practice.

Stand like you mean it. 🌊

I've spent over 30 years as a chiropractor. Prior to that I played a host of different team and individual sports. Attending practices, competing, watching others; watching and coaching kids and teens, coaching technique — and one thing has stayed true the whole way through: posture isn't just physical, it's an attitude. Your body carries this into each and every day.

Rounded shoulders and a forward head don't just come from a desk. They creep in when we're tired, stressed, guarded — quietly bracing against a long week. Watch someone walk into a room, onto the field, onto the pool deck, about to give a speech feeling defeated, and watch someone walk in feeling capable. The difference shows up in the neck and shoulders before it shows up anywhere else.

So here's a small thing to try this weekend: every time you catch yourself hunched over a phone, a bench, a steering wheel — roll the shoulders back, lift through the crown of the head, and take one full breath before you go again. It costs nothing, and it's a genuine reset, not just for your neck, but for how you carry the rest of the day.

Your posture isn't just holding up your spine. It's often a quiet reflection of what you're carrying. Put a little of it down this weekend.

Get better, stay well and feel alive. 🙏

Why "just sit up straight" isn't the full story 🔬

Posture correction isn't about willpower — it's about mechanics, and the research gives us a genuinely useful roadmap:

🔹 A 2-year clinical trial in cervicogenic headache patients found that adding a cervical traction device (Denneroll) specifically aimed at restoring neck posture led to real improvements in forward head position, neck curve, headache frequency and headache-related disability — not just in the short term, but sustained over two years.

🔹 Scapular stabilisation exercise — like the YWTL sequence I teach in clinic — has been shown to measurably improve forward head posture and rebalance the muscle activity around the neck and shoulders within a matter of weeks.

🔹 The link isn't limited to tension and cervicogenic headache — researchers studying migraine patients found significantly greater forward head posture and upper back rounding compared to people without migraine.

Here's the key principle: your head position is being held in place by a pattern of tight muscles pulling forward (chest, front of neck) and weak muscles that should be holding you back (scapular retractors, deep neck flexors). Real, lasting postural correction addresses both sides of that equation — which is exactly what a combined approach of chiropractic adjustment, targeted exercise, and tools like the Denneroll is designed to do.

This is why I don't just adjust and send you on your way — the exercise and habit piece is doing just as much of the work.

Headaches are NOT normal.

In other words, there is no such thing as a 'normal headache'. I have lost count of the number of times I have heard the phrase "Oh, I just get the normal headaches".🧐

If headaches are normal, that means I am abnormal. I do not get headaches.

Things that you do more than likely are the answer to why you are getting headaches. One such cause is your posture. It just might be writing the story behind your headaches. 📐🧠

The research on this connection is stronger than most people realise:

📊 In patients presenting with forward head posture, cervicogenic headache was found in over half (53.8%) of cases — and the more forward the head sits, the more likely the headache.

📊 A cross-sectional study of university students found a strong correlation between forward head posture and cervicogenic headache (r = 0.54) — alongside neck pain and nerve-related symptoms.

📊 In migraine sufferers specifically, researchers measuring posture found significantly greater forward head position and increased upper back rounding (thoracic kyphosis) compared to people without migraine — and the two were closely linked to each other.

📱 The average adult now spends multiple hours a day looking down at a phone or laptop — and every degree your head tips forward multiplies the load your neck has to carry.

Posture isn't just "how you look" — it's a measurable, researchable driver of the headaches so many of us are living with. This week, though our BLOG, VLOG and social media posts, I'm unpacking exactly how the two are connected, and — more importantly — (a) what the research says actually corrects it (b) the role chiropractic plays in the correction of poor posture and therefore decreasing those debilitating headaches, and (c) what you can do to help prevent them from occurring.
