Ears in Balance

Ears in Balance EARS IN BALANCE specialises in vertigo, dizziness and balance concerns Do you suffer from vertigo, dizziness or imbalance?

Ears in balance is a specialist clinic that is focused on the diagnoses and management of people with balance concerns. At Ears in Balance, we are able to assess the different structures of the inner ear that make up part of the balance system using comprehensive assessments that are based on the latest research in the field. We take a holistic approach to patient management that helps patients id

entify and better understand any life style factors that may contribute to their symptoms and what factors can help to promote recovery. We work in collaboration with specialists to determine the cause of the dizziness as well as create specialised management plans and provide ongoing support if required.

We get this question all the time, and the answer is yes — you should absolutely keep your appointment.

You don’t need to be experiencing symptoms on the day of your assessment. Many vestibular conditions are intermittent, meaning symptoms can come and go over time.

At Ears in Balance, we offer both diagnostic and treatment services. Even if you're not actively symptomatic during your appointment, we can still gather valuable information about your inner ear and balance system, identify any underlying issues, and develop a management plan should your symptoms return.

Not sure what to expect for an appointment with us?

You’re not alone.

Most people arrive feeling unsure, but our goal is for you to feel calm and clear throughout the process, and leave with a better understanding of what’s going on.

At Ears in Balance, we:
✔️ Take the time to really listen to your symptoms
✔️ Use specialised equipment to assess your balance system
✔️ Track eye movements to help pinpoint the cause of dizziness
✔️ Take the time to explain your results

Our goal isn’t just to test, it’s to help you understand your symptoms and give you a clear path forward.

When investigating dizziness, a hearing test isn’t just a part of the routine, it’s a really important piece of the puzzle.

It helps us pick up patterns that point toward specific conditions, like:
• Ménière’s disease
• Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD)
• Acoustic neuroma
• Helps distinguish between vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis

If hearing is affected, it can completely change the direction of a diagnosis—and sometimes people don’t even realise their hearing has changed.

That’s why a thorough assessment of both the hearing and balance is so important. We’re not just looking at one system, we’re looking at how they work together.

“I don’t even know how to describe it…”

The term dizziness can mean something different for everyone.

Some people describe:
- Spinning
- Light-headedness
- Rocking or swaying
- Feeling off-balance or unsteady
- Brain fog or trouble concentrating

Even if the symptom is the same - the underlying cause can be very different.
That’s why getting the right diagnosis is so important.

At Ears in Balance, we focus on identifying whether your symptoms are coming from the balance system in the inner ear—or ruling it out as a cause.

Because once you know the source, the right treatment can follow.

If you’ve been struggling to explain your symptoms, we’re here to help make sense of them.

Ever wondered how we assess your balance system in real time?

The Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) measures how well your inner ear and eyes work together to keep your vision stable during head movement.

Using specialised goggles, we record tiny eye movements while your head is moved. This test provides precise, objective information about the part of the inner ear responsible for detecting rotational movement—the semicircular canals

This test is:
✔️ Quick
✔️ Non-invasive
✔️ Highly accurate

No guesswork - just clear answers about how your inner ear is working.

Feeling dizzy or sensitive to sound… but told everything is “normal”?

Sometimes the cause is something more specific, like Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence (SSCD) — a small opening in the inner ear that can make it overly sensitive to sound and pressure.

Symptoms can include:
• Dizziness or vertigo triggered by sound or pressure changes
• Imbalance or a floating sensation
• Hearing internal sounds (like your voice or heartbeat) unusually loudly
• Ear fullness or pressure sensations

Because symptoms often overlap with other conditions, SSCD can be missed without detailed vestibular testing.

At Ears in Balance, we specialise in advanced vestibular assessment to help identify complex balance disorders and guide the next steps in care.

If your symptoms haven’t been explained yet, there may still be answers worth investigating.

If you’ve been told “everything is normal”… but you still feel dizzy — you’re not alone.

Many vestibular conditions don’t show up on standard tests.

That’s why specialised assessment matters.

Vestibular function testing can assess how each inner ear is working, identify which part of the balance system may be affected, and uncover subtle issues that routine tests can miss.

You deserve answers, and we’re here to help you find them.

Our assessments are bulk billed with a medical referral and valid Medicare card.

The most common cause of vertigo is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).

BPPV occurs when tiny crystals in the inner ear become dislodged and move into one of the semicircular canals. When you change your head position, these crystals shift, sending a false signal to your brain that you’re spinning.

This triggers an involuntary eye movement called nystagmus. The pattern of this eye movement tells us which canal is affected. The affected canal determines the most appropriate treatment approach.

At Ears in Balance, we use videonystagmography (VNG) to accurately record and analyse these eye movements, allowing for precise diagnosis and targeted treatment.

Think you might have BPPV? Let’s get you some answers.

Vertigo is not a diagnosis.

Vertigo is a symptom, not a condition.

It describes the sensation of spinning or movement when there is none, but it can be caused by many different underlying issues.

Why this matters.

People often say “I have vertigo” when what they really have is:

BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)
Vestibular migraine
Ménière’s disease
Vestibular neuritis
Vestibular labyrinthitis
Or even non-vestibular causes (neurological, medication-related, etc.)

Because of this, treating “vertigo” without identifying the cause often leads to incomplete or ineffective management.

Many of these conditions involve the inner ear.

At Ears in Balance we can test the different parts of the inner ear that make up the hearing and balance system. Let us help you find the cause of your vertigo.
