Not every winter illness feels the same. A common cold may cause mild symptoms that gradually improve, while the flu and COVID-19 can lead to fever, body aches, fatigue, cough, and a longer recovery time that affects work, family responsibilities, and daily routines.

Because symptoms can overlap, it is not always easy to tell the difference on your own, especially during busy winter months when viruses spread more easily in workplaces, schools, and the community.

Staying up to date with recommended flu and COVID-19 vaccinations may help reduce the risk of severe illness and complications, particularly for older adults, pregnant women, and people living with chronic health conditions.

If symptoms persist or you are unsure about your vaccination status, your GP can help guide the next steps based on your health needs.

Changes in bowel habits are easy to dismiss when life is busy. Many people assume it is stress, diet, ageing, or “something that will pass”.

But ongoing symptoms such as persistent abdominal discomfort, blood in the stool, unexplained fatigue, or changes in bowel movements should not be ignored.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia, and early detection plays an important role in improving outcomes. Screening is especially important for eligible age groups and people with a family history of bowel conditions.

If something feels unusual or symptoms persist, speaking with your GP is a practical first step toward understanding what may be happening.

Book an appointment with ICO Health Group to discuss bowel health concerns or screening with your GP.

There’s a particular kind of morning that comes with the cooler months, where getting out of bed takes a little longer than it used to, and your knees announce the day before your alarm does.

Most people chalk it up to getting older or the weather and get on with it. And sometimes that’s fair enough.

But stiffness and joint pain that shows up in colder weather, worsens with rest, or starts to limit what you can do isn’t something to push through indefinitely. It’s worth understanding, because in many cases, a targeted exercise program, footwear advice, or hands-on physiotherapy can make a real difference to how you move and feel.

On-site physiotherapy and podiatry services at selected clinics. No long wait, no separate referral process for most cases, just accessible, practical care in the same place you see your GP.

Now is a good time to address it, before colder days make it harder to stay active, and before small issues turn into longer-term limitations.

Ask at your nearest ICO Health Group clinic about on-site physiotherapy and podiatry: https://icohealth.com.au/contact-us/

Most people come to a GP clinic for a GP appointment. What they don't always realise is how much care happens before, around, and after that consultation.

At ICO Health Group, every clinic has a full-time nursing team. Not agency staff, not occasional support, nurses who know the clinic, know the patients, and are there every day.

Wound care and dressing changes. Immunisations and vaccination catch-ups. ECGs and chronic disease monitoring. Health education for patients navigating new diagnoses. Care coordination between your GP and specialists.

It's the kind of support that makes a real difference to how care actually feels, particularly for patients managing ongoing conditions or navigating something new.

If there's a procedure, a check-up, or a health concern that doesn't necessarily need a full GP appointment, our nurses may be able to help. Ask at reception, you might be surprised what's available.

The toddler is sick. Which means you probably can't leave the house. Which means the script renewal you needed three days ago still hasn't happened.

Or maybe you're back at work, the clinic closes before you finish, and booking something for the weekend feels harder than it should.

Telehealth exists for exactly this. A video or phone call with an ICO GP, from home, from the car, from wherever you are, that covers script renewals, follow-ups, referrals, mental health reviews, and more.

It's not a lesser version of a GP appointment. It's just a more practical one for the situations where getting in isn't realistic.

If you've been putting something off because life keeps getting in the way, a Telehealth appointment might be the easiest thing you do this week.

Managing a chronic condition, whether it's diabetes, heart disease, asthma, or arthritis, can feel like a lot of separate moving parts. The medication, the specialist appointments, the monitoring, the lifestyle adjustments.

A GP Management Plan is designed to bring those parts together.

It's a Medicare-funded plan that your GP creates with you, outlining your health goals, what services you need, and how your care is coordinated over time.

It also gives eligible patients access to Medicare rebates for allied health services like physiotherapy, dietetics, and psychology.

It's not a form to fill out. It's a proper conversation with your doctor about where you're at and what a structured approach to your health looks like.

If you're living with a chronic condition and managing it largely on your own, or if you're not sure whether you qualify, it's worth asking your GP at your next appointment.

The cooler months in Australia have a specific way of catching people off guard. The days feel fine, the weather's mild, then suddenly half the office is sick, and you realise you haven't done any of the things you meant to do before winter hit.

𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄:

▪️ Book your flu vaccine early. The vaccine takes about two weeks to take full effect, and pharmacies and clinics get busy as the cold season approaches. Earlier is better.

▪️ Stay hydrated even in cooler weather. Most people drink less water when it's not hot, but dehydration doesn't stop being relevant just because you're not sweating. Headaches, fatigue, and poor concentration are common signs you're not drinking enough.

▪️ Keep up your regular GP check-ups. It's easy to skip routine appointments when nothing feels wrong. But that's exactly when preventive care works, before something needs to be managed, rather than after.

None of these is complicated. They're just easy to push off until next month.

For years, she just thought she had a sensitive stomach. She avoided certain foods, managed around flares, didn't say much about it, because it felt embarrassing, and she assumed everyone dealt with something similar.

It wasn't until a particularly rough few months, fatigue she couldn't shake, urgent trips to the bathroom, cramping that stopped her in her tracks, that she finally saw a GP.

The diagnosis was ulcerative colitis. And as hard as that was to hear, she said the relief of actually having an answer was bigger than the fear.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis affect more than 75,000 Australians. It's chronic, it's unpredictable, and it's still widely misunderstood. Symptoms like persistent diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and blood in the stool are worth discussing with a GP, not pushing through.

Early diagnosis leads to better management. And better management means more good days.

If something hasn't felt right for a while, today is a reasonable day to do something about it.

You keep telling yourself you’ll slow down soon.

But the sleep’s still off. The tension’s still there. And the tiredness doesn’t really go away.

It’s easy to push through, especially when it doesn’t feel “serious enough”.

But when it’s been sitting with you for weeks, it’s worth paying attention.

Support doesn’t have to start at a crisis point. A GP can help you understand what’s going on and what steps make sense from here.

Before the GP walks in, she's already been in the room.

She's taken your blood pressure, put you at ease when you were nervous, explained what the test involves, and noticed, without being asked, that you seemed a little off today.

She's the one who calls to check that your results came back okay. Who remembers you mentioned a son in the hospital during your last visit. Who makes a complex procedure feel manageable.

Nursing is one of those roles that only becomes visible when you actually need it, and then you realise just how much it holds the whole thing together.

Today, on International Nurses Day, ICO Health Group acknowledges and celebrates the nursing team at every clinic. From wound care and immunisations to health education and patient support, you are the backbone of what we do.

To every nurse in our team, and in healthcare everywhere, thank you.
