Heart disease is often thought of as a man’s problem. It is not.
It is the leading cause of death in Australian women, and women are far more likely to experience few symptoms, or symptoms that do not fit the textbook picture of a heart attack. Fatigue, nausea, jaw or back pain, and shortness of breath can all be signs, often overlooked or dismissed.
Menopause is a major watershed moment for women’s heart health, with risk increasing significantly during this stage of life. But heart conditions can affect younger women too, sometimes without any of the risk factors we typically associate with heart disease.
If something has felt off, do not wait, and do not assume you are too young or too healthy for it to be your heart.
If you have any concerns about your heart health, or it has been a while since your last check, come and talk to us.
