🎉 Today I’m celebrating 3 years of Hear Me Roar Speech Pathology! 🦖💕

I am so incredibly grateful for this little business and for every family who has trusted me over the past three years. It honestly means more than I can put into words.

So many of the families I work with have been with me since the very beginning and I feel incredibly lucky to have watched their children grow, learn and achieve so much along the way. You have all been absolutely phenomenal and I’m so grateful for your continued support and trust. 🥹🩷

Speech pathology has always been my dream job and I feel so incredibly blessed that Hear Me Roar has grown into what it is today.

Today I received these beautiful flowers from a client! No special occasion, no milestone...just because.

I've worked with this family since I opened Hear Me Roar, and their child has grown up right in front of me. I've seen the hard days, the breakthroughs, the wins, the tears and all the incredible progress in between.

The relationships we build with families are so much more than a weekly therapy session.
I feel incredibly lucky to be part of this child's journey and so grateful that their family has trusted me for all these years.

Our recent Social Skills Group was a beautiful success 💛
This puppet show was a highlight! The children worked together to practise turn-taking, creativity and humour in such a natural, engaging way.
I loved watching their confidence grow as they shared ideas, connected with each other, and truly enjoyed the experience.

My client brought his SRC representative badge to therapy today just to show me, and I am beyond ecstatic to share in this moment with him.

Six years ago, this little boy came to me non-verbal, learning to communicate using an app on an iPad. Fast forward to today he is communicating verbally, reading, writing, role-playing… and now he has been chosen to represent his class as an SRC representative.

Moments like this are everything. I am so incredibly proud. One very proud speechie over here 🤍

Today is Autism Awareness Day but while we’re raising awareness, I also want to take a moment to reflect on something equally important..... the parents.

Because behind every autistic child is a parent who has walked a journey most people will never fully see.

The shock of diagnosis. The grief, the fear, the questions, the late-night Googling... or perhaps the hooray moment for finally having an answer ! Any reaction is ok, its ok to be shocked, scared, happy, relieved, surprised, overwhelmed.

Then the learning begins.
Learning how to truly support their child.
Learning new strategies. Learning how to best communicate with their child.

Advocating — in medical appointments.
Advocating — in therapy rooms.
Advocating — in classrooms.
Advocating — with family.
Advocating — sometimes daily, sometimes hourly.

Driving to therapies. Rearranging work. Juggling siblings. Researching supports. Trialling strategies. Creating visual schedules. Practising scripts.
Doing everything possible to reduce daily stress and prevent meltdowns before they even happen.
Searching for the right school.
Fighting for funding.
Explaining their child over and over again.
And somehow… holding it all together.
The emotional load parents carry is enormous and often invisible.

So today, yes, let’s raise awareness.

But let’s also acknowledge the strength, resilience, and fierce love of autism parents.

You are doing more than you know.
You are enough.
And your child is lucky to have you 💙

Today is Autism Awareness Day 💙

I feel so lucky to work alongside autistic children and their families. The way they think, the way they see the world, the way they persevere, it is something truly special.

As a speechie, we don’t say we “specialise” in one particular area… but if my heart leaned anywhere, it would be here. With these children. Advocating for them. Celebrating them. Supporting their communication in whatever form that takes.

Just this week ive seen:
- a little girl say her first phrase
- a boy use an iPad app to communicate what food he wanted 🍩
- a boy point for the first time
- a boy write a full sentence with no help whatsoever!

Autism awareness shouldn’t be a day.
It should be an everyday commitment to understanding, inclusion and acceptance.

Encourage your baby/child to talk by keeping it simple and playful 💕
As both a speech pathologist and a mum of an 18-month-old, I use these strategies every single day at home:
✨ Talk in a sing-song voice
✨ Get face to face
✨ Sing songs
✨ Say nursery rhymes
✨ Play peek-a-boo
✨ Look at picture books together

You don’t need fancy toys or long activities just connection, repetition and FUN.

At 18 months, little ones are learning through interaction. When we slow down, get on their level and make our voices animated, we make it easier (and more exciting!) for them to join in.

Small moments. Big impact. 💛

A doll’s house isn’t just for pretend play, it’s a powerful tool to build communication skills 🏠💬
Here’s how you can use it to support your child’s language development:

🗣️ Build Vocabulary
Name rooms, furniture, and actions:
“Kitchen.” “Balcony.” “She is cooking.” “The baby is sleeping.”

❓ Ask Open-Ended Questions
“What is happening?”
“Who is at the door?”
“What should we cook for dinner?”

🎭 Practice Social Skills
Role-play everyday situations like sharing, visitors arriving, bedtime routines, or problem solving.
“Oh no! The baby is crying, what can we do?”

🔄 Model Conversations
Create simple back-and-forth dialogue between characters to demonstrate turn-taking and greetings.

📖 Support Storytelling
Encourage your child to create a beginning, middle, and end. This builds narrative skills which is essential for school readiness.

❤️ Teach Emotions
Use characters to explore feelings:
“She looks sad. Why?”
“How can we help her feel better?”

I’ve been seeing a beautiful 9-year-old boy with ASD since 2019. When I first met him, he was non-verbal. We started by teaching him to communicate using an app on his iPad. Over the years, he has gradually begun communicating verbally, and recently he has made some incredible progress with his goals.

1️⃣For the first time in his life, he is sleeping in his own bed.
How is this related to speech therapy? During our sessions we created social stories to help him understand expectations around sleeping in his own bed. His receptive language has improved regarding these expectations.

2️⃣Joining the school choir.
His communication has grown so much that he can now speak in sentences and read, which has given him the confidence to join the school choir.

3️⃣Two-way conversations.
He can now ask others conversational questions without assistance and participate in back-and-forth conversations.

4️⃣Interest in friendships.
He recently told me his goal is to become friends with a specific child at school, which shows a growing interest in connecting with peers.

5️⃣Building full sentences.
He used to have difficulty combining words into sentences, but he has recently learned to use “filler” words like is, a, and the to form complete sentences.

6️⃣Explaining ideas.
He can now explain why something is happening using the conjunction because.

Watching his growth over the years has been such a privilege. Progress like this doesn’t happen overnight, it’s the result of persistence, support, and a lot of hard work from one very determined little boy. 💛
