What Do Occupational Therapists Actually Help With? 🤔✨

Occupational Therapists (OTs) help children develop the skills they need to participate confidently in everyday activities at home, school, and in the community.

OTs can support children with:

🖐️ Fine Motor Skills – handwriting, drawing, cutting, and using utensils.

🏃 Gross Motor Skills – balance, coordination, strength, and movement.

🧠 Sensory Processing – helping children respond to sensory information in a way that supports learning and participation.

👕 Daily Living Skills – dressing, toileting, feeding, grooming, and independence.

✏️ School Readiness – attention, sitting tolerance, classroom participation, and learning-related skills.

🎯 Motor Planning – learning how to plan, sequence, and carry out new movements and tasks.

👀 Visual Perception – understanding and interpreting what we see to support reading, writing, and everyday activities.

💬 Emotional Regulation & Self-Management – developing strategies to manage emotions, transitions, and challenges.

Every child is unique, and OT intervention is tailored to help them achieve their individual goals and reach their full potential.

🌟 What Is Occupational Therapy, Really? 🌟

Many people hear “Occupational Therapy” and think it’s about helping adults return to work—but OT is so much more than that!

Occupational Therapy helps people develop the skills they need to participate in everyday activities that are meaningful to them. For children, this can include:

🖍️ Fine motor skills for drawing, writing, and using scissors
🏃 Gross motor skills for playground activities and sports
🧩 Sensory processing and regulation
👕 Self-care skills such as dressing, toileting, and feeding
📚 School readiness and classroom participation
🤝 Social skills, play skills, and confidence

At Learning in Steps, our Occupational Therapists work closely with children and families to build independence, confidence, and success in daily life.

Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive in their everyday occupations—whether that’s learning, playing, creating, or connecting with others. 💙

🎯 Hand-Eye Coordination in Occupational Therapy 👀✋

Hand-eye coordination is the ability to use our eyes and hands together efficiently to complete everyday tasks. It plays an important role in a child’s development and supports skills needed at home, school, and in the community.

Some activities that rely on strong hand-eye coordination include:
✅ Catching and throwing a ball
✅ Drawing and colouring
✅ Handwriting
✅ Cutting with scissors
✅ Building with blocks or construction toys
✅ Completing puzzles
✅ Using utensils during mealtimes

Occupational Therapists help children develop hand-eye coordination through engaging, play-based activities tailored to their individual goals and interests.

Improving hand-eye coordination can enhance confidence, independence, and participation in daily activities.

🗣️ 3 Signs Your Child Might Benefit from Speech Therapy

Every child develops at their own pace, but sometimes extra support can make a big difference in helping them communicate confidently.

Here are three signs that it may be time to speak with a Speech Pathologist:

✨ Their speech is difficult for others to understand.
✨ They become frustrated when trying to express themselves or have fewer words than their peers.
✨ They find it challenging to follow directions or engage in conversations.

Early intervention can help children build the communication skills they need for success at home, school, and in everyday life.

If you have concerns about your child’s speech, language, or communication development, we’re here to help. 💙

📞 Contact Learning in Steps to learn more about how our Speech Pathologists can support your child.

✨ Daily Living Skills ✨

Daily living skills are the everyday tasks children need to become more independent and confident at home, school, and in the community. These skills may include:
🪥 Brushing teeth
👕 Getting dressed
🍴 Using cutlery
🧼 Washing hands
🎒 Packing a school bag
🥪 Preparing simple snacks

Occupational Therapy can help children develop the fine motor, coordination, planning, sensory, and self-care skills needed to complete these tasks successfully. Building independence in daily routines supports confidence, participation, and overall wellbeing 💙

At Learning in Steps, we love helping children gain the skills they need to thrive in everyday life 🌟

✨ Understanding Sensory Processing ✨

Sensory processing is how our brain receives, organises, and responds to information from the world around us 🌎

Some children may:
🔹 Seek movement or touch constantly
🔹 Be sensitive to noises, textures, or lights
🔹 Have difficulty focusing or staying calm
🔹 Avoid certain foods, clothing, or activities
🔹 Struggle with emotional regulation

Occupational Therapy can help children better understand and respond to sensory information through fun, meaningful activities tailored to their needs 💙

When children feel regulated, they are better able to:
✔️ Learn
✔️ Play
✔️ Communicate
✔️ Participate in everyday activities

At Learning in Steps, our OTs support children to build confidence, independence, and regulation skills in a supportive environment 🌟

✨ Motor Planning in Occupational Therapy ✨

Ever wondered how kids learn to plan and carry out new movements? That’s where motor planning (also called praxis) comes in!

🧠 What is Motor Planning?
Motor planning is the brain’s ability to think about, organise, and carry out a movement or task. It helps children figure out what to do and how to do it.

👶 Signs a child may have difficulty with motor planning:
• Trouble learning new skills (e.g. riding a bike, using scissors)
• Appears clumsy or uncoordinated
• Struggles to follow multi-step instructions
• Avoids unfamiliar physical tasks
• Takes longer to complete everyday activities

🛠️ How Occupational Therapy Helps:
OTs support children by:
• Breaking tasks into manageable steps
• Using repetition and practice
• Incorporating fun, play-based activities
• Building confidence and independence

🌟 Why it matters:
Strong motor planning skills support everyday tasks like dressing, playing, writing, and participating at school.

💬 If you’ve noticed your child finding movement or coordination tricky, early support can make a big difference!
