It's likely that you, someone you know, or even your favourite footy player, has had an ACL injury.
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are one of the most common sports-related injuries in Australia, with 72% of ACL reconstructions relating to sport (Zbrojkiewicz, Vertullo, and Grayson, 2018). In fact, Australia is known as the 'ACL injury capital' of the world, having the highest rate of ACL injury and reconstruction surgery per capita.
This month's five facts highlight anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, rehabilitation and return to sport. It also explains the rise of ACL injury in teenagers and young people, and ensures their rehab reflects their stage of growth, and the importance of psychological readiness to return to sport after ACL reconstruction 🦵
A big thank you to Matthew Fels APAM, Adrian Kan APAM, Rod Grof APAM, Dr Larissa Sattler APAM and Emma Blake APAM of the APA Orthopaedic National Group for sharing their knowledge and putting these five facts together.
