If we’re serious about reducing Australia’s caesarean rate, which is now over 40%, I think we’re looking at the wrong end of the problem.

A previous caesarean is now the most common reason for a caesarean, so surely the conversation needs to start with how we support first-time mums to avoid unnecessary primary caesareans in the first place.

Not by shaming women who have caesareans.

Not by pretending every caesarean is avoidable (because I know it’s not, but the WHO suggests that anything over 15% is not likely to improve outcomes).

But by asking whether our maternity system is actually set up to protect physiological birth 🤷🏽‍♀️

❤️‍🔥 Continuity of midwifery care.
❤️‍🔥 Doula support.
❤️‍🔥 Independent birth education.
❤️‍🔥 Better understanding of the female body.
❤️‍🔥 Genuine access to homebirth for appropriate women.
❤️‍🔥 And a system where midwives are supported to lead normal birth, with obstetric expertise available when and IF it’s needed.

These aren’t radical ideas.

So if I were given the job of reducing our caesarean rate, this is where I’d start.

What would you add to my list? 👇

We’ve normalised so many interventions in maternity care that sometimes the alternative starts to look reckless 🤷🏽‍♀️

💁🏽‍♀️ Induction? Normal.
💁🏽‍♀️ Epidural? Normal.
💁🏽‍♀️ Planned caesarean? Normal.

🤨 But homebirth? “Dangerous.”
🤨 Going beyond 41 weeks? “Risky.”
🤨 Writing a birth plan? “You can’t control birth.”
🤨 Preparing for physiological birth? “Don’t set yourself up for disappointment.”

And this isn’t about being anti-intervention.

Intervention can be lifesaving. Modern obstetrics absolutely has a place.

But we should be able to ask questions about why an intervention is being recommended, what the alternatives are, and whether one intervention could potentially lead to another.

Because when intervention becomes so normalised that physiological birth starts to seem unusual, we have to ask:

Have we forgotten that birth is a physiological process?

You deserve to understand your options, not simply accept the default “one sized fits all” approach to your care.

And that’s exactly why I do what I do. 🤍

I support women and couples with birth education and doula support so they can enter birth feeling informed, prepared and confident in their choices (and it’s an evidence based choice that improves outcomes…in case you need any more convincing 😉).

📍 I support women and couples in the Coffs Harbour region. DM me “DOULA” if you’d like to explore working with me.
