Green flags and red flags aren't just for dating profiles - your client list has exactly the same pattern, and most therapists have never actually looked for it. Booking the next session before leaving the room, asking what to do between sessions, mentioning you unprompted - that's someone building a relationship with your practice. Only booking when something's on fire, negotiating every time, "I'll message you" with no date - that's a pattern worth noticing, not a character judgement. Save this and run it over your next ten bookings.

Nobody warns you that “client-centred” has an edge, and training never teaches you where it is. So the guilt about having a cancellation policy, about not fitting someone in on your day off, about charging for a no-show - none of that’s a personality flaw. It’s an untrained skill. Three sentences fix more of this than a personality transplant ever will: how you say no to a late cancellation, how you say “I don’t have that time,” and the rule for your own body you don’t override because someone’s desperate. Write them this week. Which one are you missing?

Say it once and it feels generous. Say it every week, and it’s a whole unpaid day hiding inside your diary.

“I’ll just fit you in” never gets costed. It comes out of the gap you needed between two heavy sessions, the break you didn’t take, the day you were meant to have off.

Nobody asks you to add it up. So it stays invisible - right up until the week you can’t work out why you’re exhausted despite a “normal” client load.

The fix isn’t saying no. It’s replacing the sentence: “I don’t have that time, but I’ve got [specific slot].” Same helpfulness. None of the invisible cost.

How many times has your version of this sentence come out this month? Add it up and tell me.

Three reasons the belt lives in my treatment room.

One - it stops the client cheating. Give someone a stretch without it and they’ll find range everywhere except the joint you’re trying to move. Trunk rotates, pelvis follows, hip does nothing. Strapped in, they can’t. The range you get is the range you asked for.

Two - it saves my body. I’m not wrestling a leg into position or holding a limb with my whole bodyweight for the length of a stretch. The belt takes the load. That’s less shoulder, less low back, and more sessions left in your hands at 40.

Three - joint distraction. If you’ve never had it done on you properly, find someone who can. Most satisfying thing in the room. And a belt lets you create space and mobilise joints in positions you physically couldn’t hold on your own.

None of this is clever. It’s a strap that makes your treatments more specific and your career longer.

I’ve put the five positions I use it in most on one page - set-up, what it targets, and the cue I give the client.

Comment “PHYSBELT” and I’ll send it over.

I'll just fit you in" sounds like good service. What it actually is: a decision made under pressure, with no data, that costs you the gap you needed and trains everyone that your boundary moves if they ask right. The fix isn't saying no - it's saying the actual next time you've got, specifically. Same helpfulness, none of the cost to your body. Save this for the next time you feel that yes coming before you've checked your diary.

Nobody's rebooking you because they've assessed your palpation skills - they can't, they're not qualified to. They're answering four other questions instead: do you remember me, do you tell me what to expect, do you make the next step obvious, what happens when you're full. None of those are on a CPD certificate. All of them are being marked every session. Save this and check which one you're actually failing.

“Keep it cheap while you build your book” is the advice every new therapist gets, and almost nobody questions it. Here’s what it actually does: it turns your year-one rate into the number your whole client base calibrates to - not a starting point, an anchor. Confidence doesn’t arrive on a schedule, so “I’ll raise it once I feel ready” quietly becomes never. Decide where you want to be in three years and work backwards, not up from zero. Tell people the number’s changing before it changes. The client worth keeping isn’t the one protected by staying cheap. Who set your rate - you, or a version of you before you’d treated ten people?
