The calm before the first appointment... 👀

Fresh linen ✔️
Treatment table ready ✔️
Hot stones warming 🔥
Equipment prepared ✔️
Clinic cleaned and ready ✔️

There's quite a bit that happens behind the scenes before the first client even walks through the door.

Whether you're coming in for remedial massage, sports recovery or simply because your neck and shoulders have had enough of the week, I want the treatment room to feel professional, comfortable and welcoming from the moment you arrive.

Now all that's missing is the client. 😅

🧠 "My shoulders are always tight."

It's something I hear in clinic all the time.

But here's the important part:
Feeling tight doesn't automatically tell us WHY you're tight.
Is your neck movement restricted?
Are certain muscles doing more work than others?
Are you sitting at a computer all day?
Has your training load increased?
Are you sleeping poorly?
Has work been particularly stressful?

That's why I don't believe remedial massage should simply be:
"Where does it hurt? Lie down and I'll massage it."

Depending on your symptoms, an appointment may include postural observation, range-of-motion testing, movement assessment and orthopaedic testing before treatment begins.
From there we can decide whether remedial massage, dry needling, cupping, stretching, exercise—or a combination—is appropriate.

Assessment first. Treatment second.

Because understanding why something keeps becoming tight can be just as important as treating the tightness itself.

😩 Stress levels this week?

Be honest...
🟢 Pretty relaxed

Stress doesn't just affect how we feel mentally.

For some people, a stressful week also means tight shoulders, a stiff neck, headaches, poor sleep and that constant feeling that you need to stretch.

And sometimes endlessly rubbing that tight shoulder isn't addressing the whole picture.

I've just published a new article looking at stress, muscle tension and why your neck and shoulders can feel so tight when life gets busy.

🧠 Case Example: Sometimes the painful area isn't the whole story

I recently had a client attend the clinic with a long history of lower back pain and previous injury.

They arrived using a walking stick to assist with their mobility.
Rather than simply treating the lower back, I started with an assessment to look at how the hips, pelvis and surrounding muscles were functioning.

One of the key findings was significant tightness and restriction through the deep hip rotators, gluteal muscles and piriformis, along with restrictions through the lower back.

Treatment was then focused on addressing these contributing areas and improving movement rather than simply chasing the location of the pain.

By the end of the appointment, the client was able to leave the clinic without their walking stick.

Every person responds differently, and one treatment isn't a cure—but this was a great example of why I place such a strong emphasis on assessment.

Sometimes the question isn't:
"Where does it hurt?"
It's:
"What's contributing to why it hurts?"

That's where remedial massage and a thorough assessment can really come together.

Do you deal with ongoing pain?

Not the occasional sore muscle after the gym...
I'm talking about that annoying pain that has been hanging around for months—or even years.

Lower back?
Neck?
Shoulders?
Hips?
Knees?

Sometimes we get so used to it that we just accept it as "normal."

But ongoing pain doesn't necessarily mean you have to put up with it forever.

Understanding what's contributing to your symptoms can be an important first step.

👇 How long have you been dealing with your current aches or pains?

Drop it below — I'm genuinely interested to see how common this is.

New on the website: Chronic Pain & Muscle Dysfunction

Do you have pain that seems to keep coming back no matter what you try?

Maybe it's your lower back, neck, shoulders, hips or somewhere else that's been bothering you for months—or even years.

Chronic pain isn't always a sign that something is still being damaged. Muscle dysfunction, movement patterns, previous injuries, stress and changes in how your nervous system processes pain can all play a role.

I've just published a new article explaining why pain can persist, what muscle dysfunction actually means, and how assessment and remedial massage may help.
