The Stoics believed that there are two things we must do to avoid frustration and disappointment in life. First, we must take full control of those things that are within our power and second, we must learn how to be indifferent to the things we cannot control. Most people are unable to make this distinction, so they spend countless hours reading articles on other people’s opinions on subjects such as politics, global warming, or human trafficking. It’s not that these major issues shouldn’t concern you. It’s just that you need to differentiate between what you can do, with your limited time and resources. Mentally tough people do just that.

Always be careful when you are asked to surrender freedom in the name of safety.

A government should always aim to increase both freedom and security.

In Oliver Burkeman’s book Meditation for Mortald, he argues that we should focus on making choices in the present that are aligned with what we value rather than procrastinating or trying to predict the best possible outcome.

Ali Abdaal Feel Good Productivity 📕 discusses how procrastination isn’t just about lacking motivation or discipline; it’s often caused by negative emotions like uncertainty and fear. When we don’t know what we should be doing or feel overwhelmed, we freeze and put things off—this is called the “fog of uncertainty.”
To overcome this, Abdaal suggests asking yourself, “Why?” to understand the purpose behind your task. This clears up confusion and gives direction. Next, ask “What?” to break down the task into specific, manageable steps. Abdaal recommends setting “NICE goals”—goals that are near-term, input-based, controllable, and energized, focusing on the process, not just the outcome. The third question is “When?”—time blocking or setting specific times for tasks helps ensure they get done.
Abdaal also explains how fear plays a major role in procrastination. Our brains, especially the amygdala, make us feel fear even when there’s no real danger. To overcome this, Abdaal advises labeling your fear (e.g., “I feel nervous”) to reduce its intensity. He introduces the idea of creating an alter ego, a more confident version of yourself, to face challenges without fear, calling it the “Batman effect.” Abdaal also highlights the spotlight effect, where we overestimate how much others notice or judge us, and suggests realizing that “no one cares” to reduce anxiety.
He advises using the 10/10/10 rule—asking how much a situation will matter in 10 minutes, 10 weeks, and 10 years, which helps reduce the intensity of fear. Abdaal also discusses how to handle self-doubt, suggesting the question: “How confident do I need to feel just to get started?.” Often, the answer is that you don’t need to be perfect; you just need to take action. Ultimately, Abdaal emphasizes that overcoming procrastination involves clearing emotional barriers like fear and uncertainty by asking the right questions, setting energizing goals, and taking small, steps.

Love from OSHO book, Love, Freedom & Alonesness: “In a relationship, though, people often take each other for granted. Each of us is a mystery, so to believe you know someone completely is insulting and disrespectful. With each day, we become different from yesterday, so you can never say that you actually know someone. Therefore, Osho advises us to, ‘’Relate again, start again, don’t take it for granted.’’
When you are relating, you are continuously trying to get to know another person and see the many facets of their personality. You are trying to discover their inner thoughts and feelings, and by that, you are finding out new things about you, too. ‘’Lovers become mirrors to each other, and then love becomes a meditation.’’
So, don’t put boundaries on love. Use each day to find new ways of loving and being with each other, and love will become a constant adventure for you.” https://12min.com/love-freedom-aloneness

This Independence Day, I’ve been thinking about what it really means to be “free.” We often focus on external freedoms—speech, movement, choices—but what about emotional freedom? The ability to respond to life with clarity, not reactivity. With compassion, not control. To lead from wholeness, not wounds.

In the powerful film The Wisdom of Trauma, Dr. Gabor Maté explores how early trauma shapes us—often without us even knowing. One example he uses is Donald Trump—not as a political target, but as a mirror of how childhood pain can shape adulthood, power, and even national leadership.

Donald Trump grew up in a household ruled by his emotionally distant, controlling father, Fred Sr. There was no space for softness. No room for feelings. Only winning. Only strength.Trump's older brother, Fred Jr., was more sensitive and emotionally open. He struggled in this environment and eventually died from addiction-related issues.

Donald? He adapted by armoring up. He became larger-than-life, aggressive, emotionally unreachable. He learned:
“Feelings are dangerous.”
“Only dominance earns love.”
“Weakness is shameful.”

This is a classic trauma response. Where one sibling collapsed, the other inflated.
Neither were truly free. Both were hurting.

Dr. Maté’s insight is powerful: when we don’t heal our trauma, we don’t outgrow it—we act it out. Even (and especially) in leadership.

So what if real freedom is the courage to face our pain… and choose differently?
What if emotional healing is the most radical act of liberation there is?
What part of me is still running on old survival patterns?
What kind of leader, partner, parent—or citizen—could I become if I truly felt safe to be myself?

Freedom starts within. 💛 https://thewisdomoftrauma.com/
