We have had a lot of queries today about the diphtheria vaccine.
Since late December 2025, 35 cases of diphtheria have been reported in regional WA, mostly among Aboriginal communities. Most cases are concentrated in the Kimberley region, with additional cases in the Pilbara and Goldfields. The outbreak has been linked to declining vaccination rates in some communities, although high overall vaccination coverage keeps the risk of severe disease low for the wider population.
Diphtheria vaccines are only available in Australia as combination vaccines that include other antigens such as pertussis and tetanus.
They are FREE under the immunisation schedule ONLY FOR:
• children at 6 to 8 weeks, 4, 6, and 18 months, and 4 years of age
• adolescents in school Year 7
• pregnant people between 20 - 32wks (comes in the Whooping Cough vaccine)
• adult refugees 7 humanitarian entrants who have not previously received diphtheria vaccines
Due to a current outbreak in northern WA, the following people are eligible for a FREE booster if it has been more than 5 years since their last dose:
• All people living in the Kimberley, Pilbara or Goldfields-Esperance regions
• people with regular direct contact with Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley, Pilbara or Goldfields-Esperance regions
• patient-facing healthcare workers
A diphtheria booster is recommended for adults at 50 and 65 years of age but is NOT FREE. Cost is $50.
If you are not eligible for a free vaccine/booster under the Immunisation Schedule, please book a doctor's consult to discuss the suitability of the vaccine for your needs. Regular consult fees apply
