International Day of Play celebrates the vital role that play has in children’s lives. It’s an opportunity to highlight how essential play is for every child’s growth and wellbeing, and to come together to ensure all children have the chance to enjoy their right to play.

This year’s theme for International Day of Play, “Protect play, protect childhood,” is a reminder to all of us—governments, businesses, schools, and families—that play is essential for nurturing happy and healthy childhoods.

✨ Why play matters in speech therapy ✨

At Peach Speech Pathology, play isn’t just fun — it’s powerful.
Through play, children feel relaxed, motivated, and ready to connect. It creates natural opportunities to build communication skills like using words, taking turns, understanding language, and expressing ideas.

Whether we’re pretending, building, cooking, or getting a bit silly, every playful moment is carefully chosen to support your child’s goals 💬

Because when children are engaged, they learn best — and when learning feels like play, progress happens naturally 💛

🍓 Little cooks, big bravery! 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

Getting kids involved in cooking is more than just fun — it’s a powerful way to build confidence with food.

When children help prepare meals, they become familiar with new ingredients through touching, smelling, and exploring them. This hands-on experience makes new or tricky foods feel less scary and more exciting to try!

From stirring and sprinkling to taste-testing along the way, cooking gives kids a sense of ownership — and that often leads to more courageous eating at the table 💪

So next time you’re in the kitchen, invite your little one to join in. It might get a bit messy… but it’s all part of the learning (and the fun!) 💛

A huge thanks goes to Dr Shaun Ziegenfusz and the DLD Project team for their consistent and highly important advocacy for people with Developmental Language Disorder.

Advocacy matters when people listen — and when they act.

A couple of weeks ago, Dr Shaun Ziegenfusz met with Frank Paolino MLA and Professor Suze Leitao (Curtin University and Board Member of The DLD Project Foundation) to continue important conversations about Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) in Western Australia.

Last year, Frank delivered a powerful parliamentary speech raising awareness of DLD and recognising the incredible work of the North East Metropolitan Language Development Centre in his electorate. Following that speech, Shaun reached out to thank him and the conversation continued from there.

Coincidentally, our recent meeting took place during budget week, creating an important opportunity to discuss:
✔ Medicare funding gaps for children and young people with DLD
✔ Challenges accessing the NDIS
✔ The upcoming Thriving Kids reforms
✔ The critical role of speech pathologists in schools
✔ The importance of early identification and support

Frank is deeply committed to improving the lives of people with DLD and continuing to raise awareness across the community and Parliament. It is encouraging to see leaders engaging thoughtfully with the realities faced by children, families, educators and speech pathologists.

A huge thank you to Frank for his ongoing support and advocacy. We are looking forward to continuing to build this relationship and working together to create better outcomes for people with DLD.
