Open letter to all of my patients: past, present and potential

It has come with trepidation. as well as sadness to announce the end of my clinical practice as a GP. My last day of consulting as a family doctor will be Friday the 5th of June.

I will be embarking on a new journey in the University of Sunshine Coast as a clinical investigator within the Clinical Trials Unit.

Practicing both general practice and emergency medicine the last 20 years has given me the opportunity to forge strong relationships with many of you and your families.

Prior to medicine I worked in clinical trials and had thoroughly enjoyed the research aspect of medicine. I had been offered an opportunity to work again in the field and did not give it a second thought.

Clinical practice has been fulfilling but it is now the right time to move onto my first love of research. It does mean I cannot divulge any details about the job or what I will be working on at the Clinical Trials Unit. As a result, this will be my last communication regarding my work and will conclude my posting on this site as a GP.

Stay strong and remember that your health is best entrusted to those professionals who hold your best interests as paramount.

There is finally a simple, no nonsense approach to dietary guidelines: Eat real food.

It’s a message I’ve been advocating for since I studied nutrition back in 1999, but has been lost in the plethora of research done by large food companies and the pharmaceutical industry. We are healthier when we eat more naturally occurring foods, in the least processed state.

Cook meals at home rather than eating out; you don’t have to be a Masterchef to make a nutritious meal, but it will be cheaper than buying readymade foods.

A rule of thumb when it comes to shopping at the supermarket: fill most of your trolley with items from the outer rim of the store, and fewer from the inner aisles.

The summer flu this season has come and hit the Sunshine Coast community hard, with some people going out of action for a few days from high fevers and general malaise, but don’t be alarmed. it spreads easily, and quickly, but the infective wave will be over soon. it can make you feel quite miserable, but that doesn’t last long.

the best defence against such viral respiratory infections is optimising your health with naturally occurring fruits and vegetables as well as being physically fit. then when the infection hits, you have the strength to withstand it.

Unfortunately, trying to prevent infections can render your immune memory unable to recognise the next infection your body comes across, and this makes the immune response much stronger and therefore your symptoms much more prominent. there is a healthy balance we should strike between infectious disease prevention and exposure, so our immune system is always given consistent feedback to be ready for the next similar virus to the previous one we were just exposed to.

Take care this summer and Merry Christmas.

Due to the severe weather event on the Sunshine Coast on Monday, we have been without power and had therefore needed to close the surgery yesterday. Today, we are operational with the help of generators, and so bookings can be made online for both in person and telephone consultations.

Ever since Covid and the vaccine mandate, there has been increasing distrust between the medical profession and the wider community. For good reason. Since the swift rollout of the experimental vaccines, the whole world was deceived and manipulated into accepting the mRNA treatments against their better judgment.

Fast forward 4 years ahead, and childhood vaccination rates are at an all time low, with a rising number of cases of vaccine-preventable illnesses such as measles. Parents are increasingly accepting the risk of the disease rather than that of the vaccines, which are being scrutinised more and more because of what happened in 2020 and 2021.

If there is any consolation from the misadventure of this troubled time, it is this: healthcare needs can still be provided ethically and accurately by doctors who do not compel their patients to participate in any treatments against their will, nor use the argument “for the good of society”. Those doctors do exist, and it is worth your health to be cared for by them.

We vaccinate our children in the hope that they don’t suffer from the ill effects of those communicable diseases. Many of these diseases are debilitating and do pose a public health risk. But we aren’t sure if those vaccinations are not causing us other chronic health disorders due to a lack of randomised controlled trials. The government and medical authorities still encourage us to take the available vaccines despite this. Ask the question of how safe a medical treatment is before receiving it.

Australians’ health mirrors the health of our children. To reflect back on how we grew up as children, we enjoyed good health from a lot more outdoor activities and less sedentary habits such as the use of electronic devices. If we desire good health for ourselves, we ought to emulate the healthy lifestyle we once enjoyed to our children also. It requires more discipline but it pays off in the long run. Make Australia healthy again.
