A little behind-the-scenes look at the very glamorous life of a naturopath šŸ˜‚

Somewhere between the cold coffee, questionable browser-tab situation and asking people very detailed questions about their bowel habits… there’s a whole lot of detective work going on.

Because usually, the symptom you come in with is only one piece of the puzzle.

It’s looking at the full picture — your bloods, digestion, hormones, sleep, stress, nutrition, history and all the little things that *might* be connected — and working out what actually deserves our attention.

And ideally, doing it without sending you home with 14 different supplements.

The cold coffee, however, is probably here to stay. ā˜•ļø

For those of you who don’t know, we recently spent a few weeks travelling around New Zealand’s South Island with our little family and friends.

It was honestly amazing and exactly what we needed as a family.

Would we do the campervan again with five of us? Absolutely not. But we can officially add that to the ā€œglad we did it, never needs to happen againā€ list šŸ˜‚

The trip was busy, the food was ridiculously good and there were so many moments where we just looked around and couldn’t quite believe how beautiful it was. Photos really don’t do the South Island justice.

I’m also now 100% certain skiing is not my forte. Everyone else seemed to nail snowboarding while I mainly focused on staying upright. Some people simply aren’t built for snow sports, and apparently I’m one of them.

We walked a lot, ate a lot, laughed a lot, saw some incredible places and got to watch our beautiful friends get engaged.

A trip of a lifetime with our little family and friends šŸ¤

If your child’s appetite has been a struggle lately, zinc is one nutrient I always consider 🌿

Zinc plays an important role in taste and smell — two senses that are essential for food enjoyment. When zinc levels are low, these senses can become dulled, which may contribute to a reduced desire to eat.

Zinc also plays a role in appetite regulation by supporting pathways involved in hunger signalling, including hormones like ghrelin, which help communicate hunger signals to the brain.

But zinc isn’t just about appetite…

It’s one of the most important nutrients for children’s growth and development. Zinc is involved in over 300 biochemical processes throughout the body and supports:

✨ Healthy immune function
✨ Brain development and learning
✨ Mental wellbeing
✨ Wound healing
✨ Appetite regulation
✨ Healthy growth and development

Even though children only need small amounts, zinc is a powerful nutrient that supports so many areas of a growing child’s health.

If your child is experiencing ongoing appetite challenges, picky eating, or you’re concerned about their nutrient intake, it’s worth looking at the bigger picture — because appetite is influenced by many different factors.

A personalised approach can help uncover what your child’s body may be asking for šŸ¤

Foods rich in zinc include meat, eggs, dairy, seafood, nuts, seeds and legumes.

Ever taken a probiotic and noticed... nothing? šŸ¤”

Probiotics absolutely have their place.

But here’s something a lot of people don’t realise...

Not all probiotics do the same thing.

A probiotic that may help after antibiotics isn’t necessarily the one I’d choose for IBS, constipation or recurrent thrush.

Another interesting fact?

Most probiotics don’t permanently move into your gut. They pass through, interact with your existing bacteria and can still have beneficial effects—but they aren’t there to stay.

That’s why I spend just as much time talking about prebiotics.

Think of probiotics as adding bacteria.

Prebiotics are the food that helps the bacteria you already have grow and thrive.

Some of my favourite prebiotic foods include:

🌿 Cooked & cooled potatoes, rice and pasta (resistant starch)
🌿 Garlic, onions, leeks & asparagus (inulin)
🌿 Apples & pears (pectin)
🌿 Oats & barley (beta-glucans)
🌿 Legumes
🌿 Berries, extra virgin olive oil, herbs & spices (polyphenols)

Sometimes the best place to start isn’t another supplement...

It’s feeding the microbiome you’ve already got. šŸ¤

Before you close out your Monday...

Can I ask you something?

When was the last time you felt genuinely calm?

Not distracted.
Not scrolling.
Not ticking off tomorrow's to-do list in your head.

Just... calm.

It's something I think about a lot in clinic, because so many people come in convinced they're "just tired" when really, they've been living in survival mode for far too long.

If that's you, know this: your body isn't working against you. It's trying to get your attention.

I hope tonight you choose one small thing that tells your nervous system, "We're okay." šŸ¤

And if you need someone to help you uncover why you're feeling this way in the first place, my clinic door is always open.

Parenthood has a funny way of reminding us that life rarely goes to plan. šŸ¤

The quiet moments we imagine don’t always happen the way we pictured them… but that doesn’t mean they aren’t meaningful.

The messy, loud, chaotic moments are often where the biggest memories are made. ā˜€ļø

A gentle reminder this Sunday: you don’t need a perfect routine, a spotless house, or a peaceful morning to be doing an amazing job.

Find the little moments of calm where you can — and remember to care for yourself amongst it all. 🌿

If your period sends you to bed every month, this one’s for you. 🌿

So many of us were given the same advice: ā€œjust push through,ā€ take the painkillers, and wait for it to pass.

But nobody stopped to ask *why* it was happening in the first place.

As a naturopath (and someone who has had this conversation with more women than I can count), I want you to have the questions you were never given.

Period pain isn’t something you simply have to accept. It’s your body communicating — and finding the reason behind it is where the real work begins.

And it’s worth exploring. šŸ¤

Just because someone looks like they have it all sorted out doesn’t mean they do. šŸ¤

Behind every practitioner is a normal person trying to remember if they moved the washing into the dryer, wondering what’s for dinner, and reheating the same cup of coffee for the third time.

Being a Naturopath doesn’t mean I have all the answers or that I’ve mastered every part of life.

It means I’m passionate about learning, understanding the body, and helping others — while still being a human figuring things out along the way. 🌿
