Birth is often talked about as a physical event.
Contractions.
Dilation.
Pushing.
But birth is also deeply neurological.
As labour unfolds, the brain begins to shift away from the thinking, analytical part of the brain and into a more instinctive state.
This is why many women in labour become quieter, more inward focused, and less interested in conversation or decision making.
It isn’t weakness.
It’s biology.
This instinctive state allows the body to release the hormones that guide birth:
• Oxytocin – to create contractions
• Endorphins – to help cope with intensity
• Adrenaline – to give energy when the baby is close to being born
But these hormones flow best when the nervous system feels safe.
When a woman feels supported, private, and calm, the brain can stay in this instinctive state and labour can unfold more smoothly.
Birth isn’t just something the body does.
It’s something the brain and body do together.
