ResMed has introduced a new authorisation inside the myAir app that’s worth reading carefully before accepting.

It appears to allow healthcare providers to share a much broader range of health information with ResMed, potentially including medical records, diagnoses, prescriptions, insurance information, wearable data and other sensitive health information.

The part that stood out to me most was this:

“Your PHI will no longer be subject to HIPAA and will be treated as consumer data.”

That does not mean ResMed is doing anything illegal, and the authorisation is voluntary. But it does mean users should understand what they’re agreeing to, particularly because the data may be used for things like analytics, product development, machine learning, market research and marketing.

This is much bigger than just sharing your nightly CPAP data.
