🦾BIOMECHANICS🦿

Now before all the biomechanical nerds start frothing over their gait-analysis software, this post is not saying biomechanics do not matter.

They can matter.

Movement strategies can influence symptoms, performance and load distribution.

They can also change with coaching, practice, fatigue, speed, strength, task demands and intent.

But they are also highly variable, context-dependent and often stubborn.

Also many changes we do make are small, task-specific, temporary, and require constant conscious attention to maintain.

Meanwhile, people can make large changes in strength, confidence, capacity and symptom tolerance without producing any dramatic transformations in how they move.

That matters.

Because rehab should not become an endless attempt to correct every asymmetry, deviation or movement pattern as though the human body came with factory settings.

Sometimes changing technique is useful.

Sometimes changing load is useful.

Sometimes changing the task is useful.

And sometimes the most useful thing is helping someone become stronger, less fearful and more tolerant of the biomechanics they already have.

So no, biomechanics are not irrelevant.

They are just one part of a much bigger, messier and more interesting picture.

At the close of 2025, the beloved actor Dick Van D**e – famous for tap dancing with a 'twinkle in his eye' – turned 100 years old.

On the eve of his birthday, he published a book called 100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist's Guide to a Happy Life.

"I never wake up in a bad mood," he told People, ahead of the book's publishing that year.

That's an impressive claim for so many years on this planet, and while it might seem far-fetched, that upbeat attitude could be an important factor in Van D**e's extreme longevity.

A long-term study on novice nuns that began in the 1930s asked participants to write down the story of their lives. Six decades later, researchers found that those who expressed more positive emotion lived an average of ten years longer.
