โ What is Psychiatry? โ
Psychiatry is a medical field focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health conditions. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who provide comprehensive assessments and can offer both therapy and medication to support mental wellbeing.
Dr Anu Kataria works with adults experiencing a wide range of concerns, including anxiety and mood disorders, psychosis, trauma and PTSD, and personality-related difficulties. She uses a person-centred, respectful approach to care, combining medical knowledge with empathy and collaboration.
โ ๏ธ What Are Common Reasons to See a Psychiatrist? โ ๏ธ
People may seek psychiatry support when experiencing:
- Persistent low mood or anxiety
- Ongoing emotional dysregulation or distress
- Difficulties with concentration, sleep, or motivation
- Hallucinations, delusional thoughts, or unusual perceptual experiences
- Reactions to trauma or stress that affect daily functioning
Dr Kataria adopts a conservative approach to prescribing โ preferring to โstart low and go slowโ โ and integrates supportive psychotherapy within a biopsychosocial model of care. She believes in shared decision-making and is committed to helping clients feel heard, respected, and supported.
โ Why Choose Dr Anu Kataria? โ
With over 30 years of experience in both public and private mental health settings, Dr Kataria brings clinical depth, warmth, and cultural sensitivity to her work. She speaks both English and Hindi and is known for her calm, steady presence.
She values open communication with psychologists, GPs, families, and carers (always with consent), recognising that coordinated care leads to better outcomes. Dr Kataria also teaches medical students as a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sydney and has a longstanding commitment to professional education.
