Registrations are now open for the next DBT Interpersonal Effectiveness Group for adults at Wise Institute, Crows Nest.

Our Director Natasha Davis will facilitate this 9 week group program which has been adapted to include both online learning and face-to-face skills practice and application.

What is DBT?
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a very effective program for individuals who struggle to regulate their emotions and/or manage relationships effectively. The Interpersonal Effectiveness group helps you develop skills to express yourself clearly, maintain good relationships and improve your self-respect.

At Wise Institute, we have created a 9 week DBT Interpersonal Effectiveness group for adults which provides the skills learning online and the practice in person. We are keen to help adults put these skills into practice and make meaningful changes in their life.

Ever catch yourself trying to push away difficult feelings? You're not alone. ๐Ÿ’™

This week in our DBT Emotion Regulation program, we explored something that might surprise you: emotion regulation doesn't mean controlling or suppressing feelings.

It actually starts with simply noticing themโ€”without judgment.

When we practice mindfulness of current emotions, we learn to:

โœจ Notice feelings as they arise

โœจ Observe the sensations and thoughts that come with them

โœจ See the difference between feeling and action

โœจ Choose our response instead of reacting automatically

Think of emotions as messengers. When we listen without judgment, they give us valuable information about our needs and values.

This skill is so foundational that we weave it through all our DBT programs. Because once you can observe your emotions with curiosity instead of criticism, everything else becomes possible.

๐Ÿค” What's one emotion you've noticed today? How did it show up in your body?

๐ŸŒฟ DBT Emotion Regulation Group โ€“ Week 2: Core Mindfulness ๐ŸŒฟ

This week, our group turned their attention to one of the most foundational and transformative DBT skills โ€” Mindfulness.

Mindfulness isnโ€™t just a skill we โ€œtick offโ€ โ€” itโ€™s the anchor for everything else we teach. Whether weโ€™re managing intense emotions, tolerating distress, or improving relationships, mindfulness helps us pause, notice, and respond with intention.

๐Ÿ’ฌ This weekโ€™s focus:
๐Ÿ”น โ€œWhatโ€ skills โ€” Observe, Describe, Participate
๐Ÿ”น โ€œHowโ€ skills โ€” One-mindfully, Non-judgementally, Effectively
๐Ÿ”น Understanding three states of mind and finding our Wise Mind

๐Ÿง  Participants reflected on how mindfulness can:
โ€ข Build emotional awareness
โ€ข Interrupt reactive patterns
โ€ข Create space for thoughtful, values-aligned choices

๐ŸŒ€ Our DBT Skills Flowchart shows why we begin with Core Mindfulness โ€” itโ€™s the skill we return to again and again, no matter the challenge.

โœจ What makes our program unique?
โœ”๏ธ Weekly in-person sessions at our Crows Nest clinic (1 hour)
โœ”๏ธ Self-paced online modules (1โ€“1.5 hours)
โœ”๏ธ Fortnightly individual therapy (1 hour)

This hybrid approach offers both flexibility and structure โ€” supporting participants to practise skills in real time and apply them to daily life.

๐Ÿ’ก If you're curious about mindfulness or DBT, our online programs are available for independent learning, anytime:

๐ŸŒฑ Our newest DBT Emotion Regulation group kicked off last night โ€” continuing Wise Instituteโ€™s commitment to helping people build meaningful lives and stronger emotional skills.

Natasha Davis, Mikaela and Georgina welcomed participants and introduced some of the key foundations of DBT:

โœ”๏ธ Biosocial Theory & Validation
Understanding how emotional sensitivity develops โ€” and the power of feeling acknowledged and understood

โœ”๏ธ Dialectics & Walking the Middle Path
Learning to find balance and flexibility, instead of feeling stuck in all-or-nothing thinking

โœ”๏ธ Building a Life Worth Living
Focusing on values, meaning, and making sustainable change over time

This structured, skills-based group supports people who feel emotions intensely โ€” and want to improve resilience, relationships, and wellbeing.

โ“ What is Psychiatry? โ“
Psychiatry is a medical field focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health conditions. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who provide comprehensive assessments and can offer both therapy and medication to support mental wellbeing.

Dr Anu Kataria works with adults experiencing a wide range of concerns, including anxiety and mood disorders, psychosis, trauma and PTSD, and personality-related difficulties. She uses a person-centred, respectful approach to care, combining medical knowledge with empathy and collaboration.

โš ๏ธ What Are Common Reasons to See a Psychiatrist? โš ๏ธ
People may seek psychiatry support when experiencing:
- Persistent low mood or anxiety
- Ongoing emotional dysregulation or distress
- Difficulties with concentration, sleep, or motivation
- Hallucinations, delusional thoughts, or unusual perceptual experiences
- Reactions to trauma or stress that affect daily functioning

Dr Kataria adopts a conservative approach to prescribing โ€” preferring to โ€œstart low and go slowโ€ โ€” and integrates supportive psychotherapy within a biopsychosocial model of care. She believes in shared decision-making and is committed to helping clients feel heard, respected, and supported.

โ— Why Choose Dr Anu Kataria? โ—
With over 30 years of experience in both public and private mental health settings, Dr Kataria brings clinical depth, warmth, and cultural sensitivity to her work. She speaks both English and Hindi and is known for her calm, steady presence.

She values open communication with psychologists, GPs, families, and carers (always with consent), recognising that coordinated care leads to better outcomes. Dr Kataria also teaches medical students as a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sydney and has a longstanding commitment to professional education.

๐Ÿ“ A GP referral is required to access psychiatry services.

๐Ÿ“ž To get started, book a call with our intake manager (link in the comments).
