Why did we decide to focus on MTHFR? Well we started to see more and more chronically ill people who had been to doctors , specialists and countless naturopaths and were just not getting the results they should have been. Individuals with a MTHFR mutation or disordered methylation are presenting with cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammation, depression, anxiety,

Diabetes, autoimmune conditions, ADD/ADHD, Down's Syndrome, recurrent miscarriage and cancer- to name a few! We need to heal at a cellular level and what we now see is that nutritional methyl donors are restoring our patients health because we are breaking down the obstacles to healing and decreasing inflammation. We work with nutrition, co-factors and substrates required to bring the methylation cycle back into balance to reduce symptoms

Our learning always continues and it seems the more we know the more we need to know. We truly believe in a collaborative health care approach. The patient has to come first. 🧬 Does everyone have the MTHFR gene?

Yes. Every person has the MTHFR gene. In fact, we each have two copies, with one inherited from each biological parent.

MTHFR provides instructions for making an enzyme involved in folate metabolism. This enzyme helps produce 5-MTHF, a form of folate used to convert homocysteine to methionine.

When someone says, “I have MTHFR,” they usually mean that genetic testing identified a particular variant within the gene.

The two common variants most frequently reported are:
• C677T, also known as c.665C>T
• A1298C, also known as c.1286A>C

These variants are common. Having one does not automatically mean that you have a disease, methylation disorder, folate deficiency or elevated homocysteine.

Rare MTHFR variants can also cause severe enzyme deficiency. These are very different from the common variants appearing on most consumer genetic reports.

So the more accurate question is not:
“Do I have MTHFR?”

It is:
“Which MTHFR variants do I carry, and do they have any relevance to my current health?”

🌿 Wellness Wednesday: The nutrient we don't talk about enough

When you hear “MTHFR”, you probably think of folate, B12 and methylation.

But what about choline?

Choline is an essential nutrient with important roles in brain health, liver function and the structure of our cell membranes. It is also involved in producing acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter important for memory, attention, and muscle function.

But choline is particularly interesting when we talk about MTHFR.

🧬 Choline provides another route for methylation.

Some choline is converted into betaine, which can donate a methyl group to help convert homocysteine back into methionine. Importantly, this pathway does not depend directly on MTHFR or folate.

This means our methylation system isn't reliant on one nutrient or one pathway. Folate, B12, B6, riboflavin, choline and betaine all interact within a much bigger biochemical picture.

Choline also contributes to:
🧠 Normal brain and nervous system function
🌿 Healthy liver function and fat metabolism
🧬 Cell membrane structure
🔄 Homocysteine and methyl group metabolism

Food sources include eggs, soybeans, tofu, legumes, quinoa, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, nuts and seeds. Individual requirements can vary, and choline needs are especially important during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

So while methylfolate gets much of the attention in the MTHFR conversation, it isn't the whole story.

Supporting methylation means looking at the whole pathway, not just one gene or one nutrient.

🌿 Mindful Monday: what fills your cup?

We often think about everything that needs our attention at the beginning of a new week. The emails, appointments, work, family, errands and the never ending list of things that need to get done.

But how often do you think about the things that give something back to you?

It doesn't have to be a whole day of self-care. Sometimes it's going for a walk, sitting outside for ten minutes, writing in a journal, making something with your hands, listening to music you love, or simply slowing down enough to enjoy your morning coffee.

What fills your cup will look different for everyone. The important part is knowing what yours are and actually making space for them.

🧠 Can vitamin B12 or folate affect mood even when blood results appear normal? Sometimes, but a single result cannot tell us the whole story.

Total serum B12 measures vitamin B12 circulating in the blood. When the result is borderline or does not match someone’s symptoms, a practitioner may consider active B12, methylmalonic acid and homocysteine alongside the clinical picture.

Homocysteine can provide useful context, but it is not definitive proof of a “cellular deficiency.” It may be influenced by vitamin B12, folate and B6 status, as well as kidney function, thyroid function, medications, age, smoking and genetics.

Symptoms such as low mood, fatigue, brain fog, irritability or tingling may occur with vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, but they are not specific to either nutrient.

This is why practitioners need to consider:
🔬 The actual result, not simply “within range”
🩺 Symptoms and medical history
🥬 Diet and supplementation
💊 Medications and absorption concerns
🧬 Relevant genetics and wider pathology

An MTHFR result cannot diagnose a folate deficiency, and a normal blood result should not automatically dismiss persistent symptoms.

The laboratory range matters. So does the person behind the result.

🌿 Wellness Wednesday: B vitamins

We hear a lot about B vitamins for “energy”, but their role in the body goes much further than that.

There are eight B vitamins, and they work together as cofactors in hundreds of biochemical reactions. They help convert the food we eat into usable cellular energy, produce red blood cells, support the nervous system and synthesise DNA.

🧬 For the MTHFR community, some B vitamins are particularly important.

Folate, B12, B6 and riboflavin all participate in pathways involved in one carbon metabolism and homocysteine regulation. Riboflavin, or B2, is especially interesting because the MTHFR enzyme requires its active form, FAD, as a cofactor.

B vitamins also have important roles beyond methylation:

🔋 B1, B2, B3 and B5 help support cellular energy metabolism.

🧠 B6 is involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine and GABA.

❤️ Folate, B6 and B12 contribute to healthy red blood cell formation and homocysteine metabolism.

🧬 Folate and B12 are essential for normal DNA synthesis and cell division.

Most B vitamins are water soluble, so regular dietary intake is important. Good sources include legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, leafy greens and fortified foods. Vitamin B12 deserves particular attention for people following plant-based diets because reliable natural plant sources are limited, making fortified foods or supplementation important.

And when it comes to MTHFR, more is not automatically better. Your genetics are only one part of the picture. Diet, blood results, medications, absorption and individual requirements should all be considered before reaching for high dose B supplements.

✨ Supporting methylation is about providing the right cofactors, not simply taking as much methylfolate as possible.

🧬 How can two people with the same MTHFR variant have completely different mental health experiences?

Because a genetic variant does not act alone.

Common MTHFR variants can influence folate metabolism, but they cannot predict whether someone will experience anxiety, depression or another mental health condition.

Two people with the same result may have very different:
🥬 Folate and B vitamin status
🧠 Stress and trauma histories
💤 Sleep quality
💊 Medications
🩺 Hormonal and physical health
🧬 Variants in other genes
🌿 Diet and lifestyle factors

Even their homocysteine levels may differ completely.

COMT and other genes may add further context, but one combination of variants cannot tell us that neurotransmitters are accumulating or explain someone’s symptoms on its own.

The variant may be the same. The person’s biology, experiences and environment are not.

This is why personalised mental health care must look beyond one SNP.

🌿 Mindful Monday: why does doing nothing feel so uncomfortable?

You finally get a moment where nobody needs anything from you. There's nothing urgent to do, and nowhere you need to be.

So what happens?

You pick up your phone. Check your emails. Put on a podcast. Suddenly remember the washing. Maybe you even start cleaning something that absolutely did not need cleaning.

Doing nothing can feel surprisingly uncomfortable.

Part of the reason may simply be that we've become very good at filling every empty moment. Our brains are rarely left without something to process, whether it's work, messages, news, entertainment or the endless stream of information on our phones.

And when that stimulation disappears, the quiet can feel unfamiliar.

So here's a little experiment for today. The next time you have five minutes with nothing to do, don't fill them immediately.

No scrolling. No podcast. No productive little task.

Just notice what happens.

Do you feel relaxed? Restless? Bored? Do you immediately start thinking about what you *should* be doing?

You don't have to change anything. Just notice it.

After all, that's what mindfulness is really about. 🌿

🧬 Can MTHFR cause anxiety?

The connection is more complicated than a yes-or-no answer.

MTHFR variants can influence folate metabolism, which supports processes that contribute to brain health. However, an MTHFR result cannot prove that someone’s anxiety is caused by impaired methylation, depleted neurotransmitters or poor COMT function.

Anxiety can be influenced by stress, trauma, sleep, hormones, medications, nutrient status, thyroid function, physical health and many other genetic and environmental factors.

Elevated homocysteine may provide another clue, but it is not proof that MTHFR is driving someone’s anxiety. Interpret it alongside folate, vitamin B12 and B6 status, kidney and thyroid function, medications, diet, and the wider clinical picture.

Your genes may provide context. They do not replace a complete mental health assessment.
