We’re back with the stretching videos and this time with a foam roller 😉

Foam rolling can help reduce muscle tightness, temporarily improve flexibility and range of motion, and get your body feeling more mobile before or after exercise.

It can be particularly useful when paired with stretching - helping you loosen up before moving through a greater range of motion.

Think of it as one tool in the toolbox! Foam rolling can help you move and feel better, but long-term mobility still comes from a combination of movement, stretching and strength.

MYTH vs FACT: Sciatica is always caused by a slipped disc. ❌

Not always.

While a disc issue can irritate the sciatic nerve, there are other potential contributors to sciatica-like symptoms - including irritation around the piriformis muscle, which sits very close to the sciatic nerve.

That’s why treating “sciatica” without first understanding where your symptoms are coming from can miss the mark.

A physiotherapy assessment can help identify what may be contributing to your pain and determine the right combination of treatment, movement and exercises for you.

Are you actually strength training… or just doing the same weight over and over?

A simple rule of thumb Lewis uses with his clients:

🏋️ 8–12 reps
🔁 Around 3 sets
📈 Progressively increase the weight as the reps decrease

By that final set, those last few reps should feel challenging. That progressive overload is what helps your muscles adapt and get stronger over time.

Save this for your next gym session 💪

🚗 When can you drive after wearing an ankle boot?

The answer isn’t simply “when the boot comes off.”

Before getting back behind the wheel, you should be able to comfortably and safely perform an emergency stop and use the pedals without pain or hesitation.

If you’re unsure, check with your insurance provider and speak to your physiotherapist - we’ll help you know when it’s safe to get back on the road.

A new take on our myth vs fact this week…

❌ Myth: A massage alone will fix your pain.

✅ Fact: Massage and hands-on treatment can help you move better- but lasting results come from pairing it with the right exercises.

Think of manual therapy as the reset. Exercise is what helps your body keep those changes.

If you’re tired of temporary relief, let’s get to the root of the problem.

Foam rolling or stretching, which is better?

The short answer? They both have a place.

Think of foam rolling as giving your muscles an at-home massage. It can help reduce muscle tightness and leave you feeling less stiff.

Stretching, on the other hand, works by taking a muscle through a controlled range of motion to improve flexibility and relieve tension. This can be done with either static or dynamic stretches, depending on your goal.

💡 Try alternating between foam rolling and stretching throughout the week to keep your muscles moving and feeling their best.

Not sure what’s right for your body? Come in for a visit, we can help identify what’s contributing to your tightness and create a plan that suits your goals.

“Lift with your knees, not your back.” But why?

Your glutes and quads are built to handle heavy loads. When you lift with your back instead, more stress is placed on your lower spine, increasing the risk of pain and injury.

If back pain is stopping you from doing the things you love, we’re here to help.

Recovery isn’t always immediate but, with the right assessment, treatment, and plan, progress happens.

Dominica came to Lewis with ongoing back pain. Over time, through targeted treatment and understanding the root cause of her symptoms, her pain improved.

One thing that stood out to her wasn’t just the treatment- it was knowing why she was in pain and understanding what was happening in her body every step of the way.

At ALHACARE, we believe great physiotherapy is more than hands-on treatment. It’s listening, educating, and working with you to achieve lasting results.

Thank you, Dominica, for trusting us with your recovery. 💚

If pain has been holding you back, we’re here to help.
