August is a big month with two power eclipses, the first of which is a Total New Moon Solar Eclipse in Leo on August 12, followed by a Partial Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Pisces on August 28. The Solar Eclipse is really going to be the star of the show and indicates a new […]

The training happened before the wings did. Nagai paired a lavender scent with a mild electronic signal so his swallowtail caterpillars would learn to avoid the smell, then let nature run its course through the cocoon.

Roughly 70.9% of the parent generation still steered clear of lavender as adults in a Y-maze choice test. The child generation, tested only as butterflies with no larval training of their own, avoided it 64.8% of the time, and the effect carried into the grandchildren too.

Inside a chrysalis, a caterpillar's body dissolves into something closer to soup than to an animal, then reassembles itself from a handful of surviving cells. Biologists assumed that whatever memory is could not survive that kind of unmaking. Jo Nagai's butterflies remembered anyway.

Nagai is a student at Ibuki Elementary School in Kobe, Japan. He built the experiment himself, then brought it to Dr. Martha Weiss, a Georgetown University biologist who'd shown something similar in moths, and to the Masason Foundation, which funds young Japanese researchers. He presented the results at the International Congress of Entomology in Kyoto, where he won recognition including an award for the excellence of his presentation.

Something like it shows up in us. The children of Holocaust survivors carry measurable changes to FKBP5, a gene that regulates how the body handles cortisol and stress, inherited from an experience they never lived through themselves. Mount Sinai researchers documented it in blood samples in 2016. Nobody sat those children down and told them what happened. Their bodies already knew.

A caterpillar doesn't keep its brain when it becomes a butterfly. Something else survives the unmaking, folds itself into the next body, and then the one after that, without ever being taught twice. Whatever we're each still carrying that was never really ours might be moving through us the same way, passed hand to hand until a body far enough from the original wound finally sets it down.
