One of my beautiful patient came to me with persistently elevated total cholesterol despite making significant dietary and lifestyle changes. We looked deeper and identified a key factor that is often overlooked: chronic stress and elevated cortisol levels.
Cortisol, our primary stress hormone, is made from cholesterol. When the body is under prolonged stress, it can influence lipid metabolism, increase inflammation, promote insulin resistance, and contribute to higher cholesterol production by the liver. Over time, chronically elevated cortisol may be one of the drivers behind stubborn cholesterol levels.
By focusing on nervous system support and using targeted supplements to help regulate the stress response and support healthy cortisol balance, we saw a significant improvement in cholesterol markers—without any further dietary changes.
When assessing cholesterol, it’s important to look beyond food intake and consider factors such as stress, sleep quality, blood sugar balance, thyroid function, genetics, and overall metabolic health.
