Did you know your body replaces its skeleton roughly every 10 years?

Yet, the sheer complexity of how bones rebuild and repair has historically posed a major hurdle in developing targeted bone therapies. Overcoming this is a critical challenge, given that nearly half of all people over 50 will develop a musculoskeletal condition.

A newly published study by Garvan researchers Professor Peter Croucher and Dr Ryan Chai is paving the way for better bone loss treatments. The team has successfully mapped the cells and genes that regulate bone formation and loss at an unprecedented scale. Through this work, they discovered the critical role that blood vessel cells play in bone health.

When a family seeks genetic answers for an inherited heart condition, the accuracy of their result shouldn't depend on where their grandparents were born. Right now, it often does.

Because most genomic reference data comes from people of European descent, families from other backgrounds face a higher risk of uninformative or misclassified test results for conditions like cardiomyopathies and arrhythmias.

With support from a new NSW Health grant, Associate Professor Jodie Ingles and her team are expanding the Elusive Hearts Study. By partnering with families of Asian, Middle Eastern, African and Pacific heritage living in NSW for whole-genome sequencing, the team will help build more representative global databases.

Finding an open clinical trial before standard treatment options run out can be a significant challenge for people with advanced cancer.

Our new study from the NECTA network shows how hospitals across NSW worked together to streamline this process. By sharing trial availability in real time across regional and metropolitan sites, the network enabled almost half of the study's participants to enrol in an early-phase trial.

While blood testing provided useful insights, it was shared coordination between care teams that was key in helping patients access open places in time.
