Have we become so focused on optimising the body and healing ourselves that we’ve forgotten what it means to fully experience being human? I know I did for a long time…
Longevity is having a moment… it’s becoming the new buzz… but somewhere along the way the conversation seems to have become overly focused on biohacks, wearable technology and hormones as the anti-ageing elixir.
That’s not all bad, because looking after our physical health definitely matters, and many of these things absolutely have their place. But have we distorted the conversation on longevity so much that some of its most important foundations have slipped right under our noses? Pun intended 😉
When Maslow described our fundamental human needs, the foundation wasn’t peptides, cold plunges and pushing heavy weights. It began with breathing, water, food, sleep, shelter, s*x and homeostasis.
From there it continues through safety, connection and belonging, before eventually leading us to deeper questions of growth, purpose and meaning. Living life well is about caring for the relationships we have with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.
For me, that’s actually why breathwork, yoga and meditation can be so powerful. The funny thing is breathwork isn’t really about breathing… It’s about what the breath accesses within us… which is our aliveness. And when we re-connect with that, it naturally changes the way we connect with one another.
Being no stranger to depression and panic attacks over the years, and an Ulcerative Colitis diagnosis a couple of years back… if there’s one thing those experiences have taught me, it’s the power in striving less, looking within, and slowing right down. After years of going non-stop, I am appreciating how doing less can give me a lot more.
Maybe the conversation about longevity needs to include more than how long we’re alive. It needs to include what helps us stay connected to our full aliveness
