Today we celebrate the Feast Day of Mary Aikenhead and honour the remarkable legacy she continues to inspire across our hospital.

Born in Cork, Ireland in 1787, Mary Aikenhead dedicated her life to serving those most in need. Guided by her deep faith and compassion, she founded the Congregation of the Religious Sisters of Charity and realised her vision of providing healthcare where every person would be treated with love, dignity and respect.

The work of Mary Aikenhead continues today in our hospital, and we are proud of our staff and volunteers who continue to serve with dedication in this ministry of health care.

This Diabetes Week, we're raising awareness of the realities of living with diabetes and the importance of empowering people with the knowledge, skills and support they need to manage their condition with confidence.

Living with diabetes can be complex and is often misunderstood. Confidence managing diabetes isn't just about feeling reassured—it comes from having the practical tools and support to safely self-manage, make informed decisions, and build sustainable healthy habits that fit into everyday life.

Charlotte – our diabetes educators shares: "It's about empowering people to live alongside their diabetes, rather than feeling controlled by it, and supporting them to integrate sustainable, healthy lifestyle choices into their everyday lives."

Today we launched our NAIDOC Week celebrations with a flag-raising ceremony.

Despite the wet weather, spirits remained high as we came together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We received a Welcome to County from Aunty Barb Simms as a member of the Gadigal and Bidjigal clans of the Eora nation, Elder and member of our Birong Committee. Aunty Barb spoke about the importance of walking together with First Nations people on the journey towards reconciliation.

Our commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of First Nations people is embedded in our mission. While we recognise there is still much work to do, NAIDOC Week reminds us that reconciliation is an ongoing journey. Health is more than medicine—it is about connection, culture and creating environments where everyone feels safe, respected and supported.

We were also treated to a beautiful performance of "We Are Australian" by Olivia and Neenan, featuring parts of the song in the Yawuru language, as seen on The Voice Australia last year.

As we celebrate this year's NAIDOC Week, we reflect on the importance of listening, learning and walking together towards a more inclusive future.

It's National Stomal Therapy Week!

Did you know over 55,000 Australians live with a stoma? This week we celebrate their courage and the specialist stomal therapy nurses who walk alongside them every day.

A stoma is a surgically created opening in the abdomen- it can be lifesaving and life-changing. Our Stoma Therapy Nurse team provides expert care, support, and education at every stage of that journey.

Congratulations to our SVPHS Clinical Nurse Educator/Clinical Nurse Specialist on being awarded the 2026 Nursing Excellence Award sponsored by the Delta Goodrem Foundation.

Ciara was nominated by her colleagues, and she was recognised for consistently going above and beyond for both staff and patients, leading by example, and demonstrating a genuine commitment to professional development. It’s easy to see why she is so highly regarded — her kindness, humour, and expertise truly shine through.

On receiving the award, she shared that “it was a lovely reminder that kindness, hard work, and a good sense of humour don’t go unnoticed.”

🍰☕ Baking for a cause! ☕🍰

SVPHS annual Biggest Morning Tea & Bake-Off Challenge was a huge success- bringing together delicious treats and an even sweeter sense of team spirit!

A special thank you to our incredible bakers. We were in awe of the amazing variety of cakes, pastries and treats. Your time, effort, skills and generosity truly made the morning so enjoyable.

Together, we raised over $3,500 for the Cancer Council — a fantastic result for such an important cause.
And a big congratulations to the Sweet Sunrise Crew (CSSD) for taking out this year’s Bake-Off Challenge!

This week we celebrate National Volunteer Week (18- 24 May). A fantastic opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary contribution our volunteers make to our hospital every day. Whether welcoming patients and visitors, supporting clinical teams, or helping behind the scenes, our volunteers bring compassion, generosity and humanity to our services.
