This New Daily article looks at a couple of studies about the benefits maintaining mobility/flexibility over a lifetime. Almost any exercise helps, including stretching. Most of the research on stretching has been on warm up & down and injury prevention rather than longevity and healthy aging

Greater flexibility is associated with living longer. More women are flexible than men. One more reason that men die sooner?

Meeting physical activity guidelines is strongly associated with reduced risk of severe outcomes with COVID in this study. 150 min of cardio, 2 strength sessions per week.

Objectives To compare hospitalisation rates, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and mortality for patients with COVID-19 who were consistently inactive, doing some activity or consistently meeting physical activity guidelines. Methods We identified 48 440 adult patients with a COVID-19 diagnosis.....

It can be difficult for you to know if you have a lumbar, sacroiliac joint (SIJ) or hip problem. There are many tests. But a simple guide is area of pain as shown in this body chart. It’s not foolproof but a guide. The management of each area is different. Hope this helps

I though these foam roller exercises were good. The first video on lateral quads (and ITB) is the most useful. Do you have any others you do?

It’ll hurt so good!

With tight strong calves sometimes the heel get pulled in with raises loading the outside of the foot too much. It becomes difficult to get back on to the big toe at push off. Squeezing a ball helps to activate peroneals and balance the foot loading the big toe and helping weight transfer to the opposite leg. Could even just imagine that the ball is there. Also balance work on a wobble board or bosu ball will help this.

JMack Physio clients have long had to sidestep the little Honda Today 50cc scooter to come in for treatment. But no more. It was sadly stolen and vandalised last week. Not sure why 🤷‍♂️. It was found dumped on a side street in Morphett Vale by the Police after a statewide investigation. It has gone to scooter heaven and now the entrance is luxurious.

Let’s all do our part and keep SA safe. It’s been great seeing patients, some for the first time since March, and getting back to work on getting them going again. But in case there’s a second wave I’m getting prepared - masks, gloves, hygiene, laser thermometer, oximeter. And more bands etc to set up home programs. But let’s hope it doesn’t happen 🙏

Recent study Zhao et al 2020 showing significantly reduced risk of all cause mortality associated with exercise (8 year follow up of nearly 500,000 subjects). Cardio better than strength training but a combination of the two is best. I follow elite and recreational endurance runners and triathletes who do strength training, as well as strength athletes who have endurance phases in their training. I’d suggest adding some body maintenance such as pilates, yoga or tai chi for completeness. This supports the EFM, cross fit, F45 type approaches.
