It is with great sadness that the Members, Board and staff of AMSANT (the Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance Northern Territory) note the passing of Jamie Gallacher.
Mr Gallacher was a strong supporter of our Aboriginal community controlled health services and worked for AMSANT in the late 1990s. These were critical years for our sector, and Mr Gallacher played an important role in negotiating the first NT Aboriginal Health Framework Agreement and establishing the Northern Territory Aboriginal Health Forum, which has contributed to creating a genuinely collaborative approach to improving the health of Aboriginal people.
Mr Gallacher left AMSANT in 2001 to take a senior position in the first Labor government in the Northern Territory, from where he continued to dedicate himself to improving the lives of all his fellow Territorians.
Throughout, Mr Gallacher showed a deep respect for Aboriginal leadership and the rights of our people. He was a staunch supporter of the cause of Aboriginal self-determination, and a faithful guide and friend to all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
AMSANT Members, Board and staff pass on their heartfelt condolences to Mr Gallacher’s family.
