Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia NT

Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia NT Friends and family members who care for people with mental illness do a remarkable job, and significantly contribute, often without thanks, to our community.

Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia NT is a not-for profit, non-government organisation, committed to supporting people living with a mental illness and their family and friends. Statistically, Carers are more likely to suffer deterioration in their own physical and mental health, due to their 24-7 devotion to the person they care for. Unfortunately, β€œburn out” for Carers is a common scenario. Community support through planned respite, peer support groups, one-on-one support and education have all been shown to be effective services to help support Carers to continue doing what they do best. We have an Individual Recovery Program for consumers. Our aim is to increase the opportunities for recovery for people whose lives are affected by mental illness by assisting a person to identify & develop their goals & strengths, we then work alongside the person to assist them to achieve those goals & assist the participant to help them overcome social isolation and increase their connections within the community by increasing the participants personal capacity and self reliance. We also run two recreational programs for people living with a mental illness. Mi Place is a drop in and activities center, running every weekday, which provides lunch and a great sense of community. The Cool Program runs in conjunction to Mi Place and offers recreational activities Tuesdays weekly and Saturdays fortnightly.

One of our participants completed a new painting this week at MiPlace Hub. It is a pink flamingo standing on the sand beside a flower, finished with a beach backdrop that stretches across the canvas.

The art session is part of our regular weekly MiPlace program. We are open Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm. If you or someone you know would like to come along and see what MiPlace Hub is about, we would love to hear from you.

Have a great weekend, everyone. 🌸

September's Cool Program is here.

This month takes participants out to Leanyer Water Park for a splash in the sunshine, across to Crab Claw Island for a full day escape from the city, along Darwin's Mangrove Boardwalk for a calm afternoon in the fresh air, over to Anula Park to get moving on the outdoor exercise equipment, out to Fogg Dam and Marlowe Lagoon surrounded by Territory wetlands and wildlife with a BBQ lunch to finish, through Darwin's op shops hunting for hidden gems, and finishing the month with a relaxed afternoon fishing together.

Getting out regularly, trying new experiences, and spending time with others all support mental health recovery.

Check out our September calendar and get in touch to join us.

This September, MiPlace Hub is all about connection and community check-ins.

The month includes our R U OK? Day Morning Tea, a Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Talk, and a Wellbeing Workshop exploring the connection between thoughts and wellbeing. Our monthly Consumer Meeting is on as well, giving participants the chance to have their say and share feedback directly with our team.

As always, we are open every weekday from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm. The regular weekly mix continues too, including art and craft sessions, trivia, creative connections, games, and a Pool Competition with Music and BBQ Lunch on Fridays.

Come in and find an activity that makes your day. We would love to see you here.

Our Cool Program participants have been out and about over the past few weeks, with one outing to the Territory Wildlife Park and another to Howard Springs Nature Park.

At the Territory Wildlife Park, the group followed the walking tracks through the bush and took in the aquarium. At Howard Springs Nature Park, it was a shady bushwalk through the monsoon forest and a stroll along the weir above the spring fed pool.

Getting out regularly, visiting new places, and spending time with others all support mental health recovery.

If you or someone you know would like to come along on a Cool Program outing, we would love to hear from you.

Our Tennant Creek team hosted a Pamper Day at the office, with calm music playing and the kettle on.

The ladies settled in for facials with sheet masks, fresh nails set under the gel lamp, and hand massages, with a cuppa and biscuits in between. It was a chance to unwind, catch up with each other, and enjoy some well-deserved self-care time.

Thank you to BRADAAG and the Tennant Creek Womens Refuge outreach team for bringing clients along and providing transport.

If you would like to know more about what is on in Central Australia, we would love to hear from you.

Our team spent the day with the Barkly Region Alcohol & Drug Abuse Advisory Group (BRADAAG) in Tennant Creek, delivering a wellbeing workshop with the families they support.

Participants worked through activities exploring their strengths, their families, and their hopes for the future, then sat together outdoors sharing their different life journeys, experiences, and what keeps them strong.

Thank you to the BRADAAG team for such a welcoming space.

If you or someone you know would like support, we would love to hear from you.

Our participants got together for paint by numbers and a game of memory at last Thursday's Creative Connection session at MiPlace Hub.

Painting takes time, patience, and focus, and sharing the table makes it easy to chat while the work comes along.

Creative Connection runs every Thursday as part of our regular weekly MiPlace program. Our MiPlace Hub is open Monday to Friday, so come in and visit us.
