I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with an amazing panel on what it takes to develop the human skills leaders need in a world of increasing complexity.

One part I loved is that we approached each question from a science, organisational and lived experience perspective. One reflection that came into the conversation was from Sarah (bio below):

“Where we started walking in and where we were walking out was just absolutely fascinating. In my 20 years in the treatment sector, I’ve never seen anything like that.”

Below are the bios of the amazing humans in this conversation, who also shared one piece of organisational advice that you won’t want to miss!
———————————————————————
James Meaden, an organisational psychologist and researcher exploring the capabilities organisations need and the role immersive learning can play in developing them.

Kelley Westbrook, an L&D leader with more than 20 years in med tech and extensive experience in leadership development her own experience of equine-assisted learning.

Sarah Etter, a frontline leader for SHARC with more than 20 years in the treatment sector, bringing a lived-experience perspective and their own experience of equine-assisted learning.
———————————————————————
Tune in over the coming weeks as I release each part of our conversation about The Human Skills of Tomorrow and why immersive learning is becoming a competitive advantage.

First up this week: what do we actually mean by “human skills”?

Getting out of ego and being humbled can have remarkable effects.

I recently moved to a property where I work for my accommodation and bills. It was necessary to ensure I could keep dedicating time to build this business.

I was in fear and ego as I spent a couple of months weighing up the decision. Was it a backwards step? Should I give up? Will I be judged? Am I not good enough?

Thankfully, I felt those things and did it anyway. I do stable hand activities for the work and have found them deeply meditative and rewarding. They have been so restorative for my burnout following my AuDHD diagnosis.

I have again and again found this to be my experience when I let go of society pressures to be “successful.” To open myself to new experiences and get out of my way.

What could it mean for you to let go a little?

Here’s a little bit of farm life 🙏🏼💛

What if a horse could show you something about yourself… that you can’t see?

Horses notice what we bring into a relationship — our tension, our boundaries, our presence.

And unlike people, they don’t pretend.

The Horse Wisdom Program is a 7-session journey with horses designed to help you explore regulation, awareness, boundaries, connection, communication and resilience — not by simply talking about these things, but by experiencing them.

🐴 7 × 90-minute 1:1 sessions
🌿 Ground-based — no riding or horse experience required
📍 Daylesford, Victoria
✨ $140 per session or $882 package deal for the full 7-session program payment

Whether you’re looking for greater clarity, confidence, connection or simply a different way to understand yourself, the horses have something to teach you.

A lot of people that come to a session don’t have experience with horses or confidence in their presence. Don’t let this hold you back. The magic happens when we step outside our comfort zone. Watch the beauty of connection and co-regulation that happened with Evie and Lucy ✨

There’s a version of leadership that looks fine from the outside.

You’re capable. You’re delivering. You’re trusted. And underneath all of that, you’re carrying something you haven’t quite named yet.

I spent a long time in that place. Different countries, different sectors, different titles, and the same unresolved questions following me everywhere.

The things that finally shifted it weren’t the career moves. They were the harder ones. Getting sober. A burnout I couldn’t talk my way out of. A diagnosis at 35 that reframed most of my life. Moving to the countryside and getting back to horses.

Everwild is what I built for leaders who know something needs to shift, but haven’t had the space to figure out what. Horse-assisted, nature-based, built from lived experience rather than theory.

The power of the pause.

Today I was becoming annoyed with having to go out in the rain. Noticing my reaction I took a pause - decided to practice gratitude and challenge my thinking.

This immediately changed the lens for how I was viewing the world and approaching the task I had to do. This is the power of the pause. It gives us choice and to be able to respond rather than react to the world around us.

How do you pause, reflect and challenge your response to life?

22/07/2026

One of the most powerful things we can develop is self-awareness. It gives us greater choice in how we respond to life rather than simply reacting to it.

Interestingly, research by organisational psychologist Tasha Eurich found that while around 95% of people believe they are self-aware, only around 10–15% actually demonstrate it.

For me, one of the missing pieces is embodied awareness.

Not just noticing our thoughts, but becoming aware of what’s happening in our nervous system, our emotions and the sensations in our body. That awareness gives us valuable information about how life is impacting us and how we might better support ourselves.

Horses live through their senses. They often notice subtle shifts in us before we’ve consciously recognised them ourselves. People sometimes describe this as horses “mirroring” our emotions, but I think of it more as their nervous system responding to ours.

That immediate, non-judgemental feedback invites us to pause, look inward and become more aware.

And with greater awareness comes greater choice.
