Sometimes what is underneath suffering is not more pain, but something harder to face: grief, shame, fear, responsibility, choice, or the uncertainty of becoming someone different.
We can become so occupied with what happened to us that we never ask what the wound is now protecting us from seeing.
The existential question is not simply, “Why am I suffering?”
It is:
“What does my suffering allow me not to confront?”
Because sometimes the deepest descent into the shadow is discovering that beneath the pain lies a truth about ourselves waiting to be acknowledged.
Be brave. Go deeper. Ask what’s underneath.
