Saddened and heartbroken to learn the horrific acid attack on our female colleague doctor ๐Ÿ’”

Recognising the Unsung Heroes of Emergency Care

My name is Dr Ahmed Khan, a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist originally from Quetta and currently practising in Australia.

Like many people from Quetta, I was deeply saddened and heartbroken to learn of the horrific acid attack on our young surgical trainee, Mahnoor.

My thoughts are with her, her family, and colleagues during this difficult time.

Amid this tragedy, it is important to recognise the outstanding work of the ARIA Emergency Department and the teams involved in her initial care.

The emergency team, together with Plastic Surgery and Ophthalmology colleagues, provided rapid and expert treatment that stabilised her condition and helped prevent even more devastating consequences.

Mahnoor was subsequently transferred to Aga Khan University Hospital at her familyโ€™s request in a stable condition, reflecting the high standard of care she had already received.

The professionalism, dedication, and teamwork demonstrated by the ARIA team deserve recognition and appreciation.

Their efforts helped save a life, preserve a future, and support a family through an unimaginable ordeal.

The program on Diabetes Awareness and Diabetic Complications was organised by TDC and supported by Healthy Heart International and PAN Canberra on 1/2/26.

The central message was clear: Diabetes is the mother of many diseases โ€” yet it is preventable.

Diabetes is not merely a โ€œsugar problem.โ€ When uncontrolled, it silently damages multiple organs and leads to serious complications such as:
โ€ข Heart attacks and strokes
โ€ข Kidney failure requiring dialysis
โ€ข Vision loss
โ€ข Nerve damage and amputations

It is a major public health concern globally, and Pakistan ranks among the highest countries in diabetes prevalence. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for awareness, early detection, and prevention.

The encouraging reality is that diabetes can often be prevented or its onset significantly delayed through:
โ€ข Healthy, balanced diets
โ€ข Reducing refined sugars and processed foods
โ€ข Regular physical activity (at least 30 minutes daily)
โ€ข Maintaining a healthy weight
โ€ข Routine screening and early intervention

Prevention begins at home โ€” through lifestyle choices, education, and community engagement.

The collective appeal of the event was simple but powerful:

Let us work together to prevent this disease.
For our families.
For our community.
For future generations.
