Kindness and people pleasing can look very similar from the outside, but they come from very different places.
β
οΈ Kindness comes from having something to give.
βοΈ People pleasing comes from feeling like we have to give.
β
οΈ When we are being kind, we can genuinely consider another person's needs while staying connected to our own. We give because we have the capacity or because it feels aligned with who we are.
βοΈ People pleasing develops when we learn very early on (usually in childhood) that keeping others happy, avoiding conflict, being needed or putting ourselves aside for others to be comfortable or well, is how we earn love or respect. We feel liked and accepted, and this fleeting feeling can become more important than our own energy, feelings, needs or wants.
β
οΈ Here's what to ask yourself...
βοΈDo I want to do this? Do I have the capacity to do this?
Or my personal favourite...
βοΈAm I doing this because I genuinely want to or because im afraid what might happen if I dont?
Go gently
