I was fortunate enough to spend my Friday with the incredible Madelaine Longrigg from , who made the trip to Tassie to share her wealth of knowledge when it comes to supporting women and their recovery post birth. In the company of 20 amazing perinatal bodyworkers, Madeleine equipped us with a range of seemingly simple, yet potentially life-changing protocols to enrich our practice as we work to ensure women feel safe, supported and cared for after one of the most physically and emotionally demanding chapters of a woman’s life; pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.

The Caesarean Release Method is an exciting addition to my postpartum-care toolkit, and while this method has been predominantly used to support women through their caesarean recovery, I think the thing that excites me most is the fact it’s wonderful for all women, scars or no scars, to guide our healing and enable our bodies to feel like our own again.

I’ll be updating my website soon with more information about this service, but in the meantime don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to know more 🙏

I was fortunate to spend the weekend in the company of so many brilliant minds at the first ever MyoFocus Functional Health Symposium. Over two days, a variety of health professionals came together to champion an interdisciplinary approach to sleep, airway and oral health.

What was particularly remarkable, in a room full of ENTs, integrative medical practitioners, orthodontists, dentists, chiropractors, osteopaths, physiotherapists, speech pathologists, IBCLCs, naturopaths, sleep scientists (just to name a few), was the way each profession was able to demonstrate their role in this area of healthcare, while at the same time, gain invaluable insight into the roles other healthcare providers offered, with the common desire to lead with patient-based care. There was also a huge emphasis on our ability (and responsibility) to detect and manage these problems in babies and children, with much attention given to the benefit of craniofacial bodywork, as well as optimal feeding, breathing and sleep in the early intervention of things like poor mouth, jaw and facial development, dental issues, airway restriction and mouth breathing, enlarged tonsils and adenoids, poor sleep, snoring and sleep apnea.

The organisers of this event, Dr. Dan and Dr. Donny from set out to build bridges between the many professions working in these areas of healthcare and in my opinion, did precisely that 💪

I can’t forget to acknowledge the real MVPs of the weekend - my husband, mother in-law and kids! Dragging the whole family to Melbourne so mum could put on her professional hat for a moment is no simple feat, but I was so grateful and appreciative for the opportunity. Thanks fam 🥰

While a contentious topic in the infant health space, there's no denying tongue and lip ties are one of the most common reasons parents seek advice from lactation consultants, chiropractors and other body work professionals, especially in relation to breastfeeding and latch issues. The truth is though, it doesn’t need to be such a charged topic - not all oral ties negatively impact breastfeeding, and there can be a variety of ways to support and manage breastfeeding difficulties when oral ties are present or suspected. A holistic approach to their management can certainly make a big difference to the breastfeeding experience, but also support parents to make informed decisions for their individual child.

A tongue tie occurs when the tissue that connects the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth (lingual frenulum) is short, tight or thick. In the case of a lip tie, the tissue involved connects the upper lip to the gum (labial frenulum) and is similarly tight, thick or restrictive. These ties may restrict proper movement and flexibility of the tongue and upper lip, and prevent proper positioning and function when an infant attempts to latch.

Here's how bodywork may help with tongue and lip ties:
✨Release tension: bodywork techniques aim to release tension in the muscles and fascia surrounding the tongue, mouth and jaw. This tension can be a result of the tie itself or compensatory patterns that develop as a result of restricted movement.
✨Improve movement: by releasing tension and restrictions, bodywork can improve movement and flexibility of the tongue, mouth and jaw. This increased mobility may enhance the infant’s latch and ability to effectively breastfeed.
✨Address compensatory patterns: tongue and lip ties can lead to tension and poor movement patterns elsewhere in the body, such as in the neck, jaw, or shoulders.
✨Enhance treatment outcomes: bodywork can encourage proper movement of the tongue and mouth following release procedures, and support other treatments for tongue and lip ties such as speech therapy, lactation consultation, or dental interventions

The Mimos pillow is a specially designed pillow for infants who have, or are at risk of developing, positional plagiocephaly or flat head syndrome. Plagiocephaly is a condition where a baby's head develops a flat or misshapen spot due to external pressure on the soft bones of their skull.

This pillow is shaped in a way that helps distribute pressure evenly on the baby's head while they are lying down. The aim is to prevent or correct misshapenness by providing gentle support to the baby's head while at the same time promoting natural head shape development. The Mimos pillow has long been a favourite of mine as a safe and high quality tool to support the management of plagiocephaly in little ones.

*It's important to note that the use of any positioning aid or pillow for infants should be done under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional. Therapeutic pillows must be used under direct supervision and in line with safe-sleep practices.
**Not sponsored, just a long time fan and advocate of the benefits of the Mimos pillow for the correction of plagiocephaly.
