Loneliness matters.

Loneliness doesn't always look the way we expect. It can affect anyone, regardless of age, background or situation, and can often hide in plain sight.

Loneliness Week ran from August 3–9, 2026, but a week isn't enough. We live in a time where we can be so connected, yet so lonely.

According to the latest State of the Nation Report from Ending Loneliness Australia:
- Almost 1 in 3 people feel lonely, and people in rural areas are more likely to feel lonely.
- 1 in 6 people are experiencing severe loneliness (reporting that they often or always feel lonely).
- 15-24-year-olds are feeling lonelier than any other age group.

So what is loneliness?
Loneliness can be defined as a distressing feeling that accompanies the perception that one’s social needs are not being met by the quantity or especially the quality of one’s social relationships (1).

We can enjoy our alone time, and it can be a part of our self-care. But lack of connection and quality in our relationships can impact our life in many ways from feeling isolated, poor sleep, health, mood, and quality of life.

Having just 1 friend can reduce feelings of loneliness and social isolation.

Spending 1-3 hours per week with friends reduces the risk of loneliness and social isolation.

But if you are feeling lonely, and you aren't sure where to go, or who to talk to, we're here for you.
An ear when you need it.
Just walk in.
Or if you'd prefer, you can call the Medicare Mental Health Phone Line on 1800 595 212

Last week our Medicare Mental Health Centre's were out raising awareness for homelessness across the North West. Homelessness Week each year runs to build community support and drive government action to end homelessness.

North West Tasmania Women's Shelter, St Vincent de Paul Walk for Homelessness in Burnie, and The Man Walk in Devonport with the Devonport Men's Shelter.

Homelessness Week raises awareness of people experiencing homelessness, the issues they face and the action needed to achieve enduring solutions. It was great to hear about the contributions, connection, and passion from the people and organisations across our community who are working towards positive change.

Today marks the beginning of Homelessness Week 2026.

Homelessness Week raises awareness of people experiencing homelessness, the issues they face and the action needed to achieve enduring solutions. It's an opportunity to build understanding, challenge stigma, and support the collective action needed to ensure everyone has a safe place to call home.

Our Tasmanian Medicare Mental Health Centres will be attending various Homelessness Week events across Tasmania this week.

At the Devonport Medicare Mental Health Centre, we're committed to providing a welcoming space where people can access free mental health support without a referral or appointment.

Learn more about Tasmanian events this week by visiting the Shelter Tasmania website: https://sheltertas.org.au/homelessness-week-2026/

International Friendship Day reminds us that friendship is more than sharing good times. It's about connection, belonging, and knowing someone is there when you need them.

A simple text, a catch-up, or asking "How are you really doing?" can make a meaningful difference to someone's day and wellbeing.

At the heart of good mental health is connection. Together, we can create communities where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported.
