Women's Health East

Women's Health East Equality, empowerment, health and wellbeing for all women In addition Women's Health East receives funding for specific projects.

Women’s Health East is a regional women’s health promotion agency working across the Eastern Metropolitan Region of Melbourne. We work with stakeholders to build the capacity of services and programs in the region to ensure they optimally address issues affecting women. Women’s Health East works predominantly in gender-based health promotion, which involves:

- Providing leadership around women’s

health issues of regional significance and facilitating integrated responses
- Working in partnership with local governments, health and community agencies and other stakeholders to promote gender-based health promotion and service delivery, and to improve service system access and responsiveness for women
- Shaping responses to the promotion of women’s health and wellbeing through research, advocacy and consultancy
- Providing information and advice to key stakeholders in order to raise awareness of health and wellbeing issues experienced by women and to promote women’s health and wellbeing
- Delivering training and education programs for our partner organisations on women's health issues and gender sensitivity in planning and service delivery. Women’s Health East also works directly with women in order to ground our work and to:

- Understand women’s health and wellbeing issues
- Support and strengthen our health promotion
- Identify and inform responses to service system gaps

The organisation is a not-for-profit incorporated association, and receives the majority of its funding through the Department of Health. This funding comes from a variety of sources including philanthropic trusts, community grants and other areas of government including local government. The 2026 Census includes new questions about sexual orientation and gender for people aged 16 and over.

This is a significant change. Until now, the Census has not directly asked people about their sexual orientation or gender - leaving gaps in what we know about Australia’s LGBTIQ+ communities.

Census data informs research, advocacy, policy development and the planning of health and community services. More inclusive data can help build a clearer picture of our communities and support action that better reflects people’s lives and needs.

Both new questions include a “prefer not to answer” option and were developed following public consultation, engagement and testing.

We welcome this important step towards greater visibility and inclusion in Australia’s national data.

Being counted is not the end of the work. But it matters.

Workplace policies that appear fair can still create barriers for people.

Applying an intersectional gender lens means considering how gender interacts with factors such as race, disability, age, sexuality, cultural background, caring responsibilities and socioeconomic position.

It helps organisations ask:

- Who benefits from this policy or decision?
- Who may experience additional barriers?
- Whose experiences informed it?
- Who is missing from the data or consultation?

These questions can help uncover barriers across recruitment, promotion, flexible work, workplace safety and leadership opportunities.

Because workplace systems do not affect everyone equally. Creating equitable workplaces begins with recognising who may be excluded and involving those most affected in shaping the response.

The responsibility for identifying and addressing barriers should not rest solely with people who experience them. Creating workplaces that are fair, accessible and equitable is a shared responsibility.

We all have a role to play, particularly those with the power to influence workplace policies, systems and decisions.

This Disability Pride Month, we recognise the long history of advocacy by people with disability and the organisations that represent them. Their leadership must continue to shape the policies, services and systems that affect their lives.

This month, we made a submission to inform the next Victorian State Disability Plan and Victorian Autism Plan for 2027 to 2031.

Drawing on evidence from our Margins to the Mainstream and Get the Go Ahead projects, our submission highlights the importance of addressing gender inequality and ableism together.

Our evidence shows that meaningful change requires:

- Sustained, paid opportunities for people with disability to shape and lead prevention
- Genuine co-design and consultation and shared decision making that is transparent, accessible and safe
- Accessible communication, universal design and flexible ways to participate
- Ongoing workforce capacity building led by lived experience
- Long term investment in intersectional prevention

Through Margins to the Mainstream, sixteen women with disabilities participated as Experts, building their confidence to advocate for change and influence organisational policies, training and approaches.

Through Get the Go Ahead, 93% of Disabled young people said creating resources with Disabled young people made them more useful, relevant and trustworthy.

The evidence is clear. Intersectional prevention led by lived experience works.

This Disability Pride Month, we reaffirm our commitment to listening, learning and working in partnership with people with disability to build safer, fairer and more inclusive communities.

20/07/2026

On Monday 27 July, a national test of Australia’s new emergency warning system, AusAlert, will be sent to mobile devices across the country.

We are sharing this information because the test may create a safety risk for people experiencing family violence who have a hidden phone or another device as part of their safety plan.

In Victoria, the alert will be sent at 2 pm. Compatible devices may vibrate, light up and play a loud, siren-like sound for approximately 10 seconds.

If you have a hidden or secondary phone, tablet, smartwatch or other safety device that needs to remain undiscovered:
- Turn the device off or switch it to aeroplane mode by 1pm on Monday 27 July
- Keep it turned off or in aeroplane mode for 24 hours after the test
- Consider every device that may receive the alert, including phones, tablets, smartwatches and children’s safety watches

Silent mode and ‘do not disturb’ will not stop this alert. As the test is a Critical Alert, it cannot be disabled through your device settings.

Where it is safe to do so, please share this information discreetly with anyone who may need it.

For further safety information, visit:
https://www.ausalert.gov.au/community-resources/staying-safe-ausalert

If you are in immediate danger, call Triple Zero on 000.

For confidential family violence support, contact Safe Steps on 1800 015 188 or 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732.

This NAIDOC Week, we are taking time to listen, learn and celebrate the creativity, knowledge and storytelling of First Nations people.

As part of this, our team has shared some First Nations artists, songs, authors and books that have moved us, taught us, challenged us or stayed with us.

From music that celebrates identity, Country and culture, to books that deepen understanding of history, truth-telling, feminism, resilience and self-determination, these recommendations are a small way to keep listening beyond NAIDOC Week.

We encourage you to explore the artists, songs and stories shared here, and to continue seeking out, supporting and learning from First Nations voices.
