We're Still Open!

Allied Health Services (Physiotherapy, Massage, Chiropractic, Podiatry) are essential services; so ALL of Sports Lab’s clinics are still open & seeing patients! NOTE: The only cancelled services during this short lockdown are pilates & group exercise classes.

As an essential service, we are required to continue consulting with & treating clients, in a COVID-safe way, to help manage health concerns of Australians.

The advice is that normal in-person treatment should definitely continue where possible & safe. If that option isn’t possible, a virtual consultation using phone or video is the next best option that should be used.

FOOTWEAR EDUCATION | Comfort
When you run, you don’t want to stop every few minutes to adjust your laces or to stretch achy calves. If you get a chance, try the shoe on in the shop.

Specialist running shops will actively encourage this, but if you’re in a standard sports shop, at the very least you need to walk around in the shoes and make sure they feel good on your feet.

Comfort, when applied to a running shoe, is quite specific. There are certain things you want to avoid.

A gait analysis, where a camera records your running strides on a treadmill, could help you find the right pair for your feet. Plus, it could give you an idea of what is comfortable. “If your shoe aligns with your gait, it will naturally support you through every stride. If your shoe fits incorrectly, you may get pains and injuries very early on, as well as discomfort if the shape isn’t right.

FOOTWEAR EDUCATION | Breathable material!

Although we may not be able to see it, our feet sweat when we run. If your feet are sweating for a long time, they’re likely to rub against the surface of your shoes. This can lead to discomfort at a minimum, so it’s important to pick running shoes that are made using breathable material.

This feature is especially important on any material uppers (the top of the shoe). When you’re researching what shoes to buy, look out for engineered mesh or stretch-woven finishes for optimal breathability.

This key feature reduces the amount of sweat in shoe and subsequently blisters, moist environments for bacteria and fungas and last but not least enhances comfort!

FOOT EDUCATION | Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis causes pain in the bottom of the heel. The plantar fascia is a thick, weblike ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. It acts as a shock absorber and supports the arch of your foot, helping you walk.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common podiatry complaints. Your plantar fascia ligaments experience a lot of wear and tear in your daily life. Too much pressure on your feet can damage or tear the ligaments. The plantar fascia becomes inflamed, and the inflammation causes heel pain and stiffness.

The major complaint of those with plantar fasciitis is pain at the bottom of the heel or sometimes at the bottom mid-foot area. It usually affects just one foot, but it can affect both feet.

Pain from plantar fasciitis develops gradually over time. The pain can be dull or sharp. Some people feel a burning or ache on the bottom of the foot extending outward from the heel.

The pain is usually worse in the morning when you take your first steps out of bed, or if you’ve been sitting or lying down for a while. Climbing stairs can be very difficult due to heel stiffness.

After prolonged activity, the pain can flare up due to increased irritation or inflammation. People with plantar fasciitis don’t usually feel pain during the activity, but rather just after stopping

Common causes include:
•active men and women between the ages of 40-70
* Overweight or obese
* Long distance running
* Structural foot problems such as a high arch or very flat feet
* Tight Achilles

MEET OUR TEAM | Meet Lauren our amazing Chiropractor.

She achieved her masters in Chiropractic at the University of Johannesburg in 2013.

After working at two clinics in Johannesburg, She started her own successful practice, which she sold to move to Australia in early 2021.

Lauren’s approach to treatment is to take a thorough history, exam and treat according to each patient’s unique circumstances and needs. Her treatments approach includes soft tissue release, dry needling and/or manual adjustments and mobilisations.

Within our expansive multidisciplinary clinic, we successfully achieve great patient outcomes with our cross referral practise. Podiatry and Chiropractors work hand in hand employing an objective approach to quantifying pain behaviours of the back, spine and GAIT (walking and running) patterns.

You can find Lauren at our Double Bay clinic 5 days a week for any of your Chiro needs!
