If your joints and muscles seem stiffer during winter, you're not imagining it.

Colder weather can reduce circulation, tighten muscles, and make us less active, all of which can contribute to stiffness and increased discomfort. Spending more time indoors can also mean less movement, allowing aches and pains to linger.

The good news? Gentle exercise, stretching, and staying active can help keep your body moving and reduce stiffness.

Did you know the way you breathe can affect your neck and shoulders?

Shallow chest breathing can cause the muscles in your neck and shoulders to work harder than they should, leading to tension, stiffness, and even headaches.

Diaphragmatic (deep belly) breathing helps your body relax and reduces unnecessary muscle strain.

If you're dealing with ongoing neck or shoulder discomfort, your breathing pattern could be part of the picture.

Why Foot Position Affects Your Whole Body

Your feet are the foundation.
If they are not working well, everything above them feels it.

What can happen with poor foot position:
- Knees can track inward or outward
- Hips lose alignment
- Lower back can become stiff or sore
- Walking pattern becomes less efficient

Common issues:
- Flat feet
- Rolling in or out too much
- Wearing uneven shoe wear patterns

Simple signs to watch:
- Shoes wearing down on one side
- Knees feeling sore after walking
- Feet feeling tired quickly

What helps:
🟢 Supportive footwear
🟢 Strengthening foot and calf muscles
🟢 Simple balance work
🟢 Early assessment if pain starts

Your feet don’t just carry you - they guide the whole body.

The “Stand Up Test”

A simple check for mobility and strength.

How to do it:
- Sit on a chair.
- Cross your arms if you want it harder.
- Stand up. Sit back down.
- Repeat 5 times.

What I look for:
Smooth, controlled movement
No use of hands
No wobbling or struggling
No knee or back pain
What it can mean:

🟢 Easy and smooth
Good leg strength and mobility

🟡 A bit slow or wobbly
Strength or balance may need work

🔴 Hard or painful
Time to improve strength and get it checked

Simple test, but very useful.

Your legs should help you up all day - not fight you.

Can You Tell the Difference Between Muscle Soreness and Injury?

People often confuse these two.

🟢 Muscle soreness (normal)
- Starts 12-48 hours after activity
- Feels dull, tight, or heavy
- Often on both sides
- Improves when you move around
- Settles within a few days

🔴 Possible injury
- Sharp or sudden pain
- Happens during a movement or accident
- Pain in one clear spot
- Doesn’t ease with gentle movement
- May get worse over time

Simple way to think about it:
- Soreness feels like you’ve worked your muscles
- Injury feels like something has been strained or damaged

If you’re unsure, don’t wait too long - get it checked.
