Table talk 🌿
This past week in clinic I noticed something interesting.
A number of people came in with discomfort through their upper back, shoulders or arms. Some had tingling or numbness, others described an ache between the shoulder blades or a feeling of carrying tension they just couldn't seem to shift.
On the surface, they all looked like different presentations.
But as we explored what was happening in their lives, a similar pattern kept appearing.
Many had spent years protecting themselves.
Protecting themselves from being hurt.
From embarrassment.
From rejection.
From being "too much."
From being vulnerable.
It made me wonder...
How often do we close ourselves off without even realising it?
We round our shoulders.
We hold our breath.
We brace.
We armour up.
At first, it's protective, and in today's society - even 'productive' to just keep going and ignore feelings of pain or discomfort - physical or otherwise.
But when that protection is carried day after day, month after month, year after year, the body can become so used to holding on that it forgets what it feels like to soften, to open up.
That doesn't mean EVERY sore shoulder or tingling arm has an emotional cause, there are many reasons these symptoms can occur, and they should always be assessed appropriately, but it DOES mean that there may be a reason a body is more inclined to experience these symptoms/injuries.
And sometimes it's worth asking a different question.
What if your body isn't holding you back or fighting against you?
What if it's trying to tell you something?
One of the things I love most about Kinesiology is helping people become curious about their individual patterns. Because when we begin to understand WHY our body has been in its dysfunctional pattern, it often becomes much easier to heal and return to its natural vital state.
