Masculinity and emotional intelligence are not opposites.

Strength doesn't have to mean intimidation.

Many boys grow up receiving messages that strength means winning, staying in control, never showing vulnerability or always having the last word.
But strength can also look like:

✓ Respecting boundaries
✓ Apologising when you've caused harm
✓ Regulating anger
✓ Listening without defensiveness
✓ Repairing after conflict

While Off-Campus is a fictional series and includes violence and behaviours that are not condoned, it also portrays moments of respect, accountability and supportive male friendship that reflect conversations we often have in therapy.

Respectful masculinity isn't about being perfect. It's about choosing empathy, accountability and respect, again and again.

What qualities make someone feel emotionally safe to you?

For support, we provide Psychology and counselling services with telehealth or face-to-face options in Drysdale. To book an appointment, call us on 03 5292 8833 or visit our website https:/www.happyminds.net.au

With homosexuality only being removed from major medical classifications such as the DSM (1973) and the WHO ICD (1990) within recent decades, music has played a significant role in shaping belonging and identity within the q***r community, showing how far society has come today.

While many artists have contributed to this story, this timeline shows how a select few have helped shape belonging through music over time.

1970s → identity emerges through liberation and belonging
1980s → visibility grows with tension and exclusion
1990s → public visibility under scrutiny and negotiation
2000s → q***r expression enters mainstream culture
2010s–2020s → Q***r identity is visible, celebrated, and normalised in global pop, carried forward by contemporary artists such as Troye Sivan, Reneé Rapp, Lil Nas X, and Kehlani, who continue expanding representation and belonging.

Many more artists and voices could be included in this conversation.

Comment below with others you feel have shaped q***r representation and belonging through music!

Infant Mental Health Awareness Week highlights the importance of early relationships in shaping emotional, physical, and mental well-being across the lifespan.

This year’s theme, “Attunement,” refers to the capacity to notice, understand, and respond to another person’s emotional experience in a sensitive and supportive way. In infancy and early childhood, attunement plays a vital role in building secure attachment, emotional regulation, and a sense of safety and connection.

We also acknowledge the work of the Australian Association for Infant Mental Health (AAIMH) — a national organisation of professionals across multiple disciplines who work with infants, young children, and their families. Their mission is to strengthen awareness that infancy and early childhood are critical periods for emotional, physical, and mental health development.

At Happy Minds Psychology, we recognise the importance of early relational experiences and the role of caregivers in supporting infant and perinatal mental health.

We offer psychology and counselling services via telehealth or face-to-face in Drysdale.

Before starting therapy, it can help to pause and ask yourself a few simple but powerful questions:

What is bringing me to therapy?
Am I looking for support, skills, insight, or something else?
Am I open to being challenged, not just supported?
What do I hope will be different if therapy helps?
What am I willing to invest — time, energy, financially?
What type of therapy style would help me feel safe?
What fears or hesitations do I have about starting?

There’s no “right” answer, and if some of these feel uncertain, that’s okay therapy can also help you explore and clarify your goals along the way.

If you’re thinking about therapy, this is a helpful place to start.
You don’t need certainty to begin — just curiosity.

For more support, we offer psychology and counselling services via telehealth across Australia, or face-to-face in Drysdale.

Loss has a way of changing everything.
Even ordinary things can suddenly feel difficult:
Getting out of bed
Answering messages
Going to work
Making decisions
Sleeping well
Parenting while hurting
Being around other people
Concentrating on simple tasks
Feeling interested in life
Many people are surprised by how disorienting grief can be. You may feel unlike yourself. You may cry unexpectedly, feel numb for days, become easily irritated, or wonder why the world keeps moving when yours feels paused.
