NEW 4-PAGE BITE SIZE GUIDE TO SCHOOL ANXIETY — TO BE RELEASED TOMORROW

Next week, I’ll be focusing on School Anxiety — specifically children who are still attending school, but are finding it increasingly difficult.

School avoidance rarely begins on the morning a child simply says, “I’m not going.”

More often, it creeps in gradually.

The tummy aches. The Sunday night worries. The increasingly difficult mornings. The child who becomes tearful, withdrawn, angry or desperate to stay at home.

These changes can be easy to dismiss individually, but together they may be telling us that school is beginning to feel increasingly difficult.

Throughout next week, I’ll be looking at the early signs, how to explore what may be driving the anxiety, why neurodivergent children can be particularly vulnerable, and how parents and schools can work together to support a child before difficulties become more deeply embedded.

This is not about attendance at all costs. It is about understanding the individual child, identifying the barriers and putting the right support in place early.

If anxiety is already significantly affecting attendance, that sits within EBSA, which I’ll be covering separately in September.

Follow my page so you don’t miss tomorrow's guide or the School Anxiety posts throughout the week.

When we overthink, it can feel like we're solving problems. In reality, we often end up replaying the same thoughts, searching for reassurance, or trying to predict every possible outcome.

This usually isn't because we're incapable of coping. It's because our brain believes that thinking more will keep us safe.

The challenge is that uncertainty is a normal part of life, and no amount of overthinking can remove it completely.

Learning to recognise overthinking with curiosity instead of criticism is often the first step towards change. With practice, it's possible to spend less time caught in your thoughts and more time connected to the present moment.

You don't have to believe every thought your mind offers you. Sometimes, the most helpful response is simply letting it pass.
