Did you know you can turn a simple game of blocks into an opportunity for your toddler to learn language?

As you play together, model simple words like:

-Block
- On
- Off
- Knock it down!
- Again!
- More!
- Red, blue, yellow…

The secret isn’t getting your toddler to repeat every word. It’s sharing the moment, having fun together and giving them opportunities to communicate.

Pause before knocking the tower down. Look expectantly at your child and give them time to respond.

They might look at you, reach for a block, make a sound, use a gesture or say a word. These are all ways your child can communicate!

💕 Remember, connection and interaction come first. Model the words naturally and let your child learn at their own pace.

And I love toys like this because there isn’t just one way to play with them.

You can build a tower together, knock it down, make a house, hide a block, or take turns adding one block at a time.

You can model simple words and phrases like:

‘More!’
‘My turn.’
‘Your turn.’
‘Up!’
‘It fell!’
‘Build it!’

you don’t need to constantly ask questions.

Instead of ‘What colour is this?’, try commenting:

‘You’ve got the red one!’

That keeps the focus on connection, interaction and communication, rather than testing your child.

Book sharing can be a calm, enjoyable experience, but for some parents it can also feel stressful, especially when your child is constantly moving, grabbing the pages, walking away or losing interest.

And that’s okay.

Your child does NOT need to sit still and listen to the whole story for book sharing to support communication.

Follow their interests.

Maybe they want to point to the pictures.

Maybe they want to turn the pages.

Maybe they make an animal sound.

Maybe they only want to look at one page.

That’s still communication. ❤️

You can keep it simple by commenting on what your child is looking at rather than testing them with lots of questions.

Instead of:
❌ “What’s that?”
❌ “What colour is it?”
❌ “Where’s the dog?”

Try:
✅ “Look! Dog!”
✅ “The dog is running!”
✅ “Woof woof!”

And if they walk away?

Let them.

You can leave the book open and come back to it later. Sometimes the best book sharing happens in little moments throughout the day.

It’s not about finishing the story.

It’s about sharing a moment together.
