"Don't assume you know what I'm trying to say."

Those seven words, shared by one of our clients after a stroke, have become one of the most important lessons our Speech Pathologist carries into every conversation.

During Stroke Week, we're reminded that communication isn't about speaking perfectly. It's about being heard.

When someone is living with communication changes after a stroke, your patience matters. Pausing, listening and giving them the time to find their words can make all the difference.

At Icaria Health, we're proud to support people to rebuild confidence, connection and communication after stroke. One conversation at a time.

We're also expanding our Speech Pathology team. If you're passionate about neurological rehabilitation, person-centred care and making a genuine difference in people's lives, we'd love to hear from you.

After a stroke, the biggest milestones often aren't the ones people see.
Through an Occupational Therapy lens, stroke recovery is about more than regaining physical function.
It's about getting dressed independently, preparing a meal, managing fatigue, using an affected arm or hand, and returning to the activities that bring meaning to everyday life.
Occupational Therapists support people to rebuild skills, adapt tasks and environments, and find practical solutions that help them participate in the activities they need and want to do.
Because meaningful recovery isn't just about what a person can do.
It's about returning to the life they want to live.

What should you expect at your child's first appointment?

Taking that first step can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to do it alone.

Our team takes the time to get to know your child, understand your family's concerns, and create a plan that's tailored to their unique needs. Because you know your child best, and your insights matter.

If you're ready to get started, you can submit a referral online through our website. Our team will then be in touch to guide you through the next steps.

If you've been wondering whether to ask for support, trust that instinct.

Parents often reach out because:
• Their child is eating a limited range of foods
• Lunchboxes are becoming challenging
• Mealtimes feel stressful
• They're unsure whether nutrition needs are being met
• They've been told to "wait and see"

You don't need to have all the answers before seeking support.

Our paediatric dietitian is here to listen, answer questions and help you develop practical strategies that work for your family.

Not sure what to expect?
We start by listening.

We'll talk about:
• What's working well
• What's feeling challenging
• Your child's eating patterns
• Mealtimes, lunchboxes and routines
• Your goals as a family

Together, we'll develop practical strategies that can be used at home, school or wherever life takes you.

Families often leave feeling relieved, informed and confident about their next steps.

Many families spend months wondering if they should seek support.

Questions like:
• Are they eating enough?
• Is this normal?
• Should I be concerned?
• Will they grow out of it?

A dietetics appointment isn't always about ongoing therapy.

Sometimes it's simply an opportunity to ask questions, gain clarity and walk away with a plan.

Our goal is to help families feel confident, supported and reassured.

You know your child better than anyone else... and that's exactly where great therapy begins.

At Icaria Health, we believe the best outcomes happen when families and therapists work together.

As a parent or carer, you're the expert on your child. Your insights, goals and lived experiences help shape therapy that is meaningful, individualised and centred around what matters most to your family.

In the first episode of our Parent FAQs with Sheree mini series, our Paediatric Team Leader explains what it really means to be a family-centred practice and why your voice is such an important part of your child's therapy journey.

What question would you like Sheree to answer next? Leave it in the comments, and it might be featured in an upcoming episode!

This is one of the most common concerns we hear from parents.

While food preferences are a normal part of development, they can create stress when variety starts feeling limited.

Supporting children to explore new foods isn't about pressure or forcing them to eat.

It's about creating positive experiences around food and finding strategies that suit your child.

Our paediatric dietitian can help families understand what's typical, when to seek support and what steps may help.
