Let’s Get Physical is one of the village's popular activities, focusing on physical health and wellbeing. Held every Tuesday morning, the program attracts a large group of residents who enjoy staying active while socialising with others in a fun and supportive environment.
Another popular activity is Tai Chi, held every Monday and enjoyed by a dedicated group of residents. The gentle exercises promote balance, flexibility and overall wellbeing, making it a favourite among many in the village.
Many residents also have furry companions and can often be seen out walking with their dogs throughout the day. With a couple of kilometres of roads within the village, residents have plenty of opportunities to enjoy safe and convenient exercise while taking in the pleasant surroundings.

Manual handling refresher training is a great way to keep safety front of mind and ensure everyone continues to use safe techniques in the workplace. It helps build confidence, reduce the risk of injury, and supports a safe and healthy work environment for all.

Keeping Everyone Safe
Refresher training reinforces safe manual handling practices, helping workers protect themselves and their colleagues from preventable injuries.

Staying Up to Date and Compliant
Regular training helps employees stay informed about Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements, workplace procedures, and industry best practices.

Reducing the Risk of Injury
Revisiting key manual handling principles encourages safe habits and helps workers apply the correct techniques consistently in their day-to-day tasks.

Refreshing Skills and Building Confidence
Training provides an opportunity to review and strengthen manual handling skills, ensuring workers feel confident and capable when carrying out manual handling activities.

By taking part in regular refresher training, workers can help create a safer workplace while maintaining the knowledge and skills needed to perform their roles safely and effectively.

LONELINESS AWARENESS WEEK AUSTRALIA
3-9 AUGUST 2026

Connection doesn’t happen by accident.
It grows in the spaces we create for each other.

WHY MAKE ROOM?
Half of us are feeling lonely and/or socially isolated. It’s a shared human experience that requires a shared response.

Research involving more than 4,000 Australians found:

1 IN 2 PEOPLE
living in Australia experience some form of social disconnection

HAVING 1 FRIEND
can reduce loneliness and social isolation by 89%

SPENDING 1-3 HOURS PER WEEK
with friends reduces the risk of loneliness and social isolation by 90%

ATTENDING COMMUNITY EVENTS
reduces the risk of loneliness and social isolation by 89%

A spare seat at the table, an open invitation, a smiling face on arrival, an event built around something you love, a circle that stretches a little wider – these small but deliberate acts of room-making help us all show up, belong and feel less alone.

This Loneliness Awareness Week we’re celebrating the everyday ways people living in Australia are making room for each other, and we’re calling on everyone to make room for connection at home, work, school and in the community.

A friendly reminder about the upcoming Australia-wide test of the new AusAlert emergency warning system.

On Monday, 27 July, compatible mobile devices across Australia will receive a test emergency alert. This is a planned national test designed to help ensure the system works effectively when it is needed in a real emergency.

When the test alert is received, your mobile device may vibrate, play a loud siren-like tone and display a message clearly identifying the alert as a test. While the sound may be unexpected, there is no cause for concern.

The test alert is scheduled for:
2.00 pm (AEST) in Queensland and New South Wales
1.30 pm (ACST) in South Australia

You do not need to do anything when you receive this test alert.

AusAlert will become Australia's new emergency warning system and, in a real emergency, will be used to share important information about events such as bushfires, floods and other significant incidents.

If you have any questions or concerns about the test, please speak with the Village Office or visit https://www.ausalert.gov.au/alerts-explained/national-test for more information.

International Red Shoe Day is a vibrant and meaningful event that highlights the struggles faced by those with invisible illnesses. This day encourages kindness and empathy, aiming to create a world where invisible illnesses are better understood and acknowledged.
Participants wear red shoes to bring attention to diseases like Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome. The red shoes symbolize passion and a commitment to raising awareness about the challenges these patients face daily.

National Rat Catcher’s Day is observed on 22 July each year and pays tribute to one of the oldest and least glamorous professions in human history: the humble rat catcher. The date traces back to the legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, the multicoloured musician hired to rid a German town of its rats.
It is a quirky occasion that celebrates pest controllers past and present, while inviting us to revisit a strange and enduring medieval tale.

• Thank a pest controller – If you have ever relied on a professional to deal with an infestation, a quick word of thanks marks the day nicely.
• Read the Browning poem – Robert Browning’s “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” is short, vivid, and free to read online.
• Visit Hamelin virtually – The town’s tourism pages offer photos and history of the legend, including the famous Rattenfaengerhaus, or Rat Catcher’s House.
• Explore the real history – Dig into the surprising career of Jack Black, the self-styled rat catcher to Queen Victoria, whose story is as colourful as the piper’s coat.

Today is Global Hug Your Kids Day, an annual reminder for parents and carers to cherish the time they have with their children and express their love through simple acts of affection.
Research has shown that hugs and affectionate touch can help reduce stress and promote the release of oxytocin, often referred to as the "bonding hormone." Unlike many modern observances, this day has no commercial focus—the only currency is love, connection, and care.
In the rush of everyday life, it can be easy to overlook simple gestures that strengthen family bonds. Global Hug Your Kids Day encourages families everywhere to pause, reconnect, and remember that time together is precious.
Ways to celebrate:
🤗 Reconnect with grown-up children – Call, visit, or send a heartfelt message. A hug matters at every age.
📱 Hug from a distance – If distance separates your family, a video call, voice note, or letter can share the same warmth.
🌟 Pass it on – Encourage friends and relatives to show affection to their own children and loved ones.
Sometimes the simplest gesture can make the biggest difference. Take a moment today to remind the people you love that they are important to you. ❤️

It has been a busy six months at Murray Gardens, with many improvements completed and plenty of activities taking place throughout the village.
Significant work has been carried out in and around the Community Centre. Half of the roof has been replaced, all carpet tiles have been renewed, and new flooring has been installed in the main lounge. The floors in the second lounge and dining area have also been professionally cleaned, giving these spaces a fresh new look.
A wonderful new set of cupboards has been installed in the second dining area. The craft and quilting groups now have plenty of storage for their supplies, along with ample space for jigsaws and table games. These cupboards were generously funded by the Social Committee. The Bar Committee has also contributed a beautiful new mat for the carpet bowls group, which has been greatly appreciated by participants.
Our builders have been kept busy refurbishing both serviced apartments and independent living units. In addition to their regular duties, the maintenance team has been hard at work refreshing the road markings throughout the village.
The gardens continue to receive plenty of attention, and recently the enthusiastic gardening group has been busy establishing the community garden. At the same time, contractors have been undertaking irrigation renewal works throughout the village, helping to keep our grounds looking their best.
There is always something happening at Murray Gardens, and these improvements continue to enhance the village for all residents and visitors to enjoy.
