Knights young gun Francis Manuleleua returned to play over the weekend in the Knights’ elimination final, just 12 days after sustaining an elbow dislocation.

Fortunately, Manuleleua avoided any associated fractures, allowing him to undertake an intensive rehabilitation program focused on restoring proprioception, joint stability, strength and overall function to baseline levels.

While returning to play so soon following an elbow dislocation carries an increased risk of re-dislocation, a targeted and progressive rehabilitation approach allowed Manuleleua to successfully restore the required strength, stability and function to return to the field in time for the Knights’ must-win finals clash.

This week's journal club is exploring osteoarthritis pain beyond just structural issues, providing insight into patients' pain drivers and functional limitations, rather than relying on imaging alone.

Local Woodberry product and Broncos, soon to be Souths, NRL powerhouse Payne Haas is set to undergo surgery next week to “straighten out” two fingers on his left hand.

While the exact injury hasn't been confirmed publicly, the appearance sounds potentially consistent with a boutonnière deformity. This can occur when the central slip of the finger extensor tendon is injured, causing the middle joint of the finger to become progressively stuck in a bent position, with the fingertip joint becoming more extended.

These injuries can sometimes be managed without surgery when treated early, but an established deformity may require surgery to restore alignment and function.

Haas has reportedly played through the problem for much of the season, but unfortunately the timing means he is expected to miss the Rugby League World Cup with Samoa later this year.

The positive? He should have the opportunity to get the hand sorted and head into 2027 fit and ready for his move to the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Sydney Roosters halfback Sam Walker has suffered a high-grade syndesmosis injury, commonly known as a “high ankle sprain”.

🔹 Injury to the ligaments connecting the distal tibia and fibula, which help stabilise the ankle. They are typically caused by excessive external rotation and/or forced dorsiflexion of the ankle — mechanisms commonly seen in contact sports.
🔹 Pain is often felt above the ankle joint, with symptoms reproduced by external rotation, dorsiflexion and weight-bearing. Clinical tests such as the squeeze test and external rotation stress test can assist assessment, with imaging used when a high-grade injury is suspected.
🔹 Initial physiotherapy management focuses on protecting the injury, reducing pain and swelling, maintaining appropriate ankle ROM and gradually restoring weight-bearing capacity. Depending on severity, this may involve a boot, crutches and restricted loading.
🔹 Return to play is typically around 6–8 weeks for lower-grade injuries, while high-grade injuries requiring surgery can take 10–16+ weeks, depending on healing, stability and progression through running and contact-based rehabilitation.
🔹 Low-grade, stable injuries can often be managed conservatively, while high-grade or unstable syndesmosis injuries may require surgical fixation. Return to sport is generally slower than a typical lateral ankle sprain.
