Summer head cold? So annoying. 🤧

You know the feeling — hot and cold at the same time, headache creeping in, muscles aching, nose completely blocked. And it’s summer – you want to be outside enjoying the warmth, not inside in bed!!

In Chinese medicine, this pattern is often diagnosed as Wind-Cold and one of our favourite classic formulas for early-stage head colds is Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction).

Used since the Han Dynasty, it’s sometimes called the “first of all prescriptions” because of how beautifully it harmonises the body.

✨ Cinnamon twig & fresh ginger help release the pathogen
✨ White peony nourishes and eases muscle tension
✨ Red dates nourish the body
✨ Licorice harmonises the whole formula

It’s simple, balanced, and incredibly effective — when prescribed correctly.

⚠️ Not suitable if you have strong heat signs like a burning throat, high fever, or yellow phlegm.

🐎🔥 Chinese New Year 2026 – The Year of the Yang Fire Horse
Welcome to a year of passion, movement and powerful energy.

In Chinese astrology, the Horse symbolises freedom and strength. Add the Fire element, and we get a double Yang year – full of warmth, creativity and momentum.

In TCM, Fire relates to the Heart and Spirit (Shen) 💓.
Balanced Fire = a clear mind, good circulation, emotional stability.
Excess Fire = anxiety, insomnia, inflammation and overwhelm.

This year, the key is nourishing your Yin to stay grounded.
Try to:
✨ Go to bed earlier and rest deeply
✨ Eat well and avoid too much sugar
✨ Slow down – don’t rush everything
✨ Make space for stillness and calm

Controversial things we do (sometimes) as TCM Practitioner’s:
- eat bananas
- drink coffee
- have cold drinks with ice
- run

You may have heard these are a no no in Chinese Medicine but we’re here to remind you that it’s all about balance! Especially in the warmer months.

Most of us come out of our degrees thinking you can eat banana’s but they’re an incredibly healthy fruit that should be enjoyed, unless you have ALOT of damp (imagine thick white tongue coat and carries a lot of water weight), then perhaps you need to not go overboard.

Coffee, well… why not if it’s something that brings you joy! Unless you are TTC, stick
to your one cup a day 😉.

Yes, we have one small ice drink sometimes for example but then drink room temp water for the rest of the day. But if you’re having ice water all day in winter, then we may have a slight problem.

And running, it’s not for everyone but it’s totally ok if it’s something you enjoy and you don’t feel tired afterwards. Again, just don’t go overboard and hydrate well afterwards.

🌺 Dan Shen (Red Sage) | Chinese Herbal Medicine

Dan Shen, also known as Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza), is one of the most important herbs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for circulation, inflammation, emotional health and women’s health.

Although you’ll see the beautiful red sage flowers around Melbourne, it’s the root that is used in Chinese herbal medicine.

Traditionally, Dan Shen is prescribed to:
❤️ Improve blood circulation & relieve pain
🔥 Reduce inflammation & heat in the body
🧠 Calm the mind and ease irritability
🌸 Widely used for period pain & gynaecological conditions
💓 Support sleep and palpitations

It’s commonly used in clinical practice for joint pain, stress, insomnia, migraines, inflammatory conditions and emotional imbalance.

Modern research is now exploring Dan Shen for its role in cardiovascular disease, liver health, cancer and neurological disorders.

We’re so excited to welcome Kerrie to our team of acupuncturist and Chinese herbal medicine practitioners 🌿

After two years living in Canada and the USA, Kerrie has returned to Australia and brings a thoughtful, grounded approach shaped by her farm-to-table upbringing in NSW.

Kerrie’s is particularly interested in reproductive and hormonal health, including issues such as

• Endometriosis, adenomyosis & fibroids
