Nobody asks a sprained ankle to behave better. But we've been asking overwhelmed nervous systems to do exactly that for decades.

Save this if it landed for you. Share it if someone needs to see it.

When a neurodivergent person doesn't participate, everyone assumes it's a choice.
Here's what's actually happening in the body.
When a neurodivergent person struggles to participate, it's not attitude. It's not effort. It's not willingness.

It's physiology.

The neurodivergent body is often working at or near capacity before the task even begins.

Joints that work harder to stay stable.
A nervous system already scanning for threat.
Internal signals that don't communicate clearly.
Movement that costs more than it looks like it should.

This isn't behaviour to manage.

It's a body doing its best with a system that runs differently.

“Nothing.”

That was always my answer when they asked what I did to dislocate it.
Nothing.
For years I also couldn’t understand why the harder I trained or exercised the more exhausted I became.
That didn’t make sense to anyone.
Including me.
It turns out my body was doing a second job the whole time.
For many neurodivergent people, simply existing can be physically expensive.
Holding posture.
Sitting upright.
Walking through shopping centres.
Staying regulated in noisy environments.
Trying to look “normal.”
When joints are less stable, muscles work harder to create stability.
When body awareness is less reliable, movement takes more conscious effort.
And when the nervous system is constantly scanning for safety, exhaustion builds even faster.
Hypermobility, connective tissue differences, dysautonomia, and proprioceptive differences are increasingly being recognised alongside autism and ADHD.
Some people spend decades masking socially ...
While also masking pain, dizziness, fatigue, digestive issues and physical overwhelm.
Maybe you weren’t dramatic.
Maybe you weren’t “too sensitive.”
Maybe your body was compensating the entire time.
You weren’t lazy.
Your body was carrying more than anyone realised.
Including you.
Did anyone else spend years blaming themselves? I’d genuinely love to hear your experience.

📣 Physiotherapy services under the NDIS are at risk.

Recent funding cuts mean small providers like myself may no longer be able to offer home visits or ongoing support to many clients — especially those living rurally.

The Australian Physiotherapy Association is calling for urgent change. Please sign and share the petition to help protect access to physiotherapy for those who need it most.

Every signature counts. Thank you for your support 💛

World Autism Acceptance Day

At Be Yourself Allied Health, we’re proud to be part of the growing movement that’s shifting the narrative from awareness to genuine acceptance, inclusion, and celebration of autistic individuals.

We don’t believe in one-size fits all support. We believe in relationships, curiosity, and creating space for each person to show up fully without needing to mask, explain, or justify their differences.

On this day, we celebrate neurodivergent voices, including my own children who teach me every day what true inclusion really looks like. As a mum, I know how much love, patience, and understanding goes into creating a world that truly embraces differences. And it's a privilege to witness that growth, both at home and in the work we do at Be Yourself Allied Health.

We’re recommitting to the work of listening, learning, and co-creating safer, more flexible spaces where being yourself is more than okay… it’s the goal. And we want to hear from you, how are you celebrating Autism Acceptance Day in your home and community?

Hugh writes a letter to parents of neurodivergent children that truly captures the emotional journey of raising kids who experience the world differently.

This letter is a powerful reminder that you are not alone. It acknowledges the struggles, the self doubt, and the immense dedication that so often go unseen. More importantly, it speaks to the continued strength and love that neurodivergent parents show every single day.

If you need a moment to feel understood, seen, and supported—this is for you.

We see and hear you!
