Did you know that regional Australians are 17% more likely to suffer a stroke than those in metropolitan areas?

This National Stroke Week we want you to know that you don’t need a cape to be a hero 🦹‍♀️– you just need to know how to recognise the signs of stroke. Knowing the F.A.S.T. (Face, Arms, Speech and Time) signs means you can act quickly when every second counts.

The F.A.S.T. test is simple:
🙍‍♀️FACE: Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
💪 ARMS: Can they lift both arms?
👄SPEECH: Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
⏱️ TIME IS CRITICAL: If you see any of these signs call 000 (triple zero) immediately.

As an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse, Lee is known for her compassionate care, reliability, and dedication to residents. Beyond her clinical role, she has played an important part in fostering a positive and supportive workplace culture, always willing to lend a hand and support her colleagues.

Lee is especially admired for the way she welcomes new staff members, helping them feel comfortable, valued, and part of the team from day one. Her kindness, inclusiveness, and genuine care for others have left a lasting impression on countless staff and residents over the years.

❤️ This DonateLife Week, Grampians Health Nurse Donation Specialist Naomi Moore is encouraging community members to register as organ and tissue donors and have an important conversation with their loved ones.

After more than 25 years working in Ballarat Base Hospital's Intensive Care Unit, Naomi has seen the life-changing impact donation can have for recipients, as well as the comfort it can bring donor families during an incredibly difficult time.

While 4 in 5 Australians support organ and tissue donation, only 1 in 3 are registered. Family support is essential, which is why sharing your donation decision is just as important as registering.

Emma Miller has been down some rocky roads but it’s all part of her role as a Grampians Health occupational therapist.

Emma makes a weekly trip from Horsham to visit clients in all corners of the West Wimmera region, including Edenhope, Harrow, Apsley and every district in between.

Some of her trips can take her to isolated farms where she has to rely heavily on directions from others because there are no road signs or satellite navigation. She has never been lost and is not phased by her adventures because her focus is solely on getting the right support for each client.

💙 Welcome to Edenhope, Grace and Roy!

For nursing couple Grace and Roy Goco, moving to rural Victoria wasn't a stepping stone, it was the destination.

The registered nurses recently joined the team at Grampians Health Edenhope and relocated with their two young children in search of a more family-oriented lifestyle.

"We wanted our kids to be at one with nature and to be able to live an outdoor life. This is the life we were looking for," Grace said.

After working and living in the Philippines, Singapore, regional New South Wales and Melbourne, the family has found a welcoming community in Edenhope, where their children can enjoy the outdoors and neighbours quickly become friends.

Grace and Roy now care for residents at Lakeside Living while balancing family life and continuing their shared passion for nursing.

Surya Bhattarai moved to Australia, from Nepal, to study a Master of Business Administration course.

He had experience in hospitality management, in his touristy hometown of Pokhara, and expected to continue down the business pathway. But when Surya took on a personal carer role, to support his student lifestyle, all plans were promptly cast aside. “I just felt an inner feeling, that this will be my career choice,” he said.

“For some people aged care will be hard, but for me it feels like looking after my grandfathers and grandmothers. “I realised it was what I wanted to do, so I decided to study nursing instead.”

Surya promptly moved to Adelaide, where he gained qualifications as an enrolled nurse and gained experience at the Calvery Hospital. It was during a search for a graduate program pathway that Surya came across Grampians Health Edenhope. He instantly felt at home in the quiet rural town.

“My family farms vegetables in the hilly region of Nepal and the weather is exactly the same as here,” he said. Although he misses a busy calendar of cultural events in Nepal, Surya and his wife are building connections in Australia.

“We gather people together, cook together, eat and celebrate,” he said. “I think there are now six people from Nepal in Edenhope; we have already planned a feast!”
