Upper Cross Syndrome is a common postural pattern that develops when certain muscles in the neck, chest, and shoulders become tight while others become weak. It is often associated with prolonged sitting, desk work, computer use, and frequent mobile phone use.

People with Upper Cross Syndrome may notice:

• Forward head posture
• Rounded shoulders
• Neck stiffness or tension
• Upper back discomfort
• Frequent headaches
• Reduced shoulder mobility
• Muscle fatigue around the neck and shoulders

Over time, these postural changes can place extra strain on the muscles and joints of the neck, shoulders, and upper back, making everyday activities less comfortable.

The good news is that improving posture, strengthening weakened muscles, increasing mobility, and addressing movement habits can often help reduce symptoms and improve overall comfort and function.

If you've been spending long hours at a desk and are noticing neck or shoulder tension, a posture and movement assessment can help identify contributing factors and provide guidance on practical ways to improve your posture and movement patterns.

Phone posture and headaches
Many people notice more neck tension and headaches after long periods on phones, laptops, or desk work.
A growing body of research has explored how sustained forward head posture may increase strain through the neck and upper shoulder muscles — particularly during prolonged screen use.
One 2023 review noted that extended device use was consistently associated with increased neck discomfort, muscle fatigue, and postural strain in both adults and adolescents.
Of course, posture is rarely the only factor involved.
Sleep, stress, movement habits, workload, and general physical conditioning all play a role too.
But it’s a useful reminder that small movement breaks and ergonomic changes throughout the day can matter more than people realise.

If you've been suffering from headaches, neck and back pain, we'd love to see if if we can help you improve. Call the clinic on 9822 0588 to book an appointment and take that first step to a better tomorrow.

💡 SELF-CARE TIP

If you sit for long periods during the day, try setting a reminder to stand up and move every 30–45 minutes.

Even a short walk, gentle stretch, or posture reset can help reduce stiffness in the neck, shoulders, and lower back.

Small movement breaks throughout the day are often more helpful than waiting until your body is already sore.

Your body was designed to move. 🚶

🧠 DID YOU KNOW?

Jaw tension and TMJ dysfunction can sometimes contribute to headaches, neck tension, and facial pain.

Many people clench their jaw during stress or sleep without even realising it — placing extra strain on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles.

At Synergy Health & Wellbeing Centre, we take a calm, evidence-informed approach to TMJ assessment and care.

Our principal chiropractor, Dr. Allan Kalamir holds a PhD in TMJ treatment research — one of the few chiropractors in Australia with this level of TMJ expertise, having been a long time lecturer at Macquarie University

💪Staying active isn’t just about training — it’s about recovery too.

📈Research shows manual therapy and chiropractic care can support mobility, reduce injury risk, and help athletes maintain consistent performance.

📊Systematic reviews in sports physiotherapy literature (e.g. Bialosky et al., 2009; Weerapong et al., 2005) suggest that manual therapy:

✔️Improves range of motion and joint mobility
✔️Reduces muscle stiffness and perceived tightness
✔️May help reduce risk factors associated with common injuries (especially when combined with exercise)

🤲If your body feels tight, restricted, or not quite right, a a treatment at our clinic can make a difference in how how you perform; whether you get injured; and how well you recover from them.

Teen back pain isn’t rare
Low back pain isn’t just an adult issue — it’s increasingly reported in adolescents as well.

🎓A randomized trial explored whether combining hands-on care with exercise made a difference for teens with ongoing back pain.

🩻Over 12 months, those receiving a combination of spinal manual therapy and exercise showed greater improvements in pain compared to exercise alone.

🔎The differences weren’t dramatic overnight — but they were consistent over time, which is often what matters most in persistent conditions.

For growing bodies, this reinforces a broader principle:
🔹 Movement is important
🔹 Supportive care can play a role
🔹 Outcomes tend to build gradually, not instantly

It’s rarely about a single solution — but rather how different approaches work together.
