What is myopia? 👁️

Myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness, is a condition where close objects appear clear, but anything in the distance looks blurry. It happens when the eyeball grows slightly too long, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.
For a child, this might mean they can read a book easily but can’t make out the whiteboard at school, or struggle to spot a friend across the oval. 🧑🏼‍🏫🚶🏻‍♀️‍➡️

Myopia typically develops in childhood and tends to worsen as children grow, which is why the primary school and teenage years are such a critical window. Once the eyes stop growing (usually in the early-to-mid twenties), it generally stabilises.

It’s not just about needing glasses. 👓 Higher levels of myopia increase the lifetime risk of conditions like retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration - which is why slowing progression early matters far beyond just clearer vision today.
